1326657 2013-02-08 02:46:00 Hi W T

I notice in one of your replies above that your Eset is set to scan on Fridays. Why are these regular scans necessary??

Surely if Eset is doing its job, and there is no doubt it is, all nasties are picked up before infecting my computer. I only do a scan every three months or so, and it finds nothing, so I just wondered why you do yours weekly. Your comments would be appreciated.

1326658 2013-02-08 06:11:00 Hi Smithie,
I set Nod to do weekly scans mainly for the following.

I've been to several peoples places where someone has installed Nod32, and left it as is, meaning its not working to its full potential, and sometimes when a scan is done minor infections can be found.

To be honest, 99% of the time the scans don't find anything as mentioned.

The weekly scans are more from habit and as an extra precaution, theres been the odd time that something ( usually minor) will sneak through and sit in the temp files, usually not active, but still there.

MANY people never clean out the temp files, ours here get done daily, its a routine really, just before going to bed run Ccleaner, then shut down. Theres been countless times when working on peoples computers, its not uncommon to remove GB's worth of junk from the temp files.

Weekly is the longest time period it will allow, so I set it for a time that people may be not using the computer. Ours is set to run when we go out and do the grocery shopping, so by the time we get back, had dinner its all over and done.

Theres been a few times as I mentioned above Nod is just installed, and the software has never done a scan since the day it was installed.

First thing I do if someone has Nod, is look at the logs / Detected Threats, they will tell you what has been detected and stopped and when, some people get a shock when they see the loooooong list ;)

Once set fully, the real time system Protections usually works quite well.
Heres mine on this PC, Windows 8.

1326659 2013-02-08 06:38:00 Thanks for that Wainui. I was talking to effie c on Skype last night and we were both wondering why you did a regular scan, so he too will be interested in your reply.

I have just had a look at my logs/Detected threats and there in nothing there.

Again thanks for your time, you have enlightened us both.

1326660 2013-02-08 08:27:00 Every Single one of those items listed are from downloading ( or trying to) download some programs with the occasional alert of an active/Known malware on a page ( some are from Facebook - Peoples Posts/Links), and Nod has detected some sort of Malware in the File/ Link.

Nothing underhanded or illegal in what I was downloading, simply something thats on the known Malware list, could be Open Candy, Toolbar installers etc.

I've got mine set to its maximum protection.

Edited: heres a little test,:devil download this ISO burnerhttp://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Tools/Data-CD-DVD-Burning/Free-ISO-Burn-Wizard.shtml Nod should stop it at 99%.

Brave enough ? ;)

Nifty. Haven't even had to adjust default settings from my NOD32 v5 and it does likewise :D

1326662 2013-02-08 10:25:00 Good to know the default setting in Nod detected it.

Wonder if the other AV's in use detect anything ?

AND NO - I'm not testing at the moment - 4 work stations all full with work and another 2 PC's on the floor waiting.

1326663 2013-02-08 18:52:00 Did your test Wainui and my Eset did not pick anything up :annoyed: It is set to maximum protection. Looks as though I may have to ask for my money back from Eset  smithie 38 (6684)
1326664 2013-02-08 20:31:00 When you install, you quite likely told it you *didn't* want the protection of PUP - Potentially Unwanted Programs.

This isn't a "virus" as such, just a program that most people won't actually want. That's why yours would have proceeded.

Yep that could be why - to check open Nod32 Press F5 to open the advanced menu, under antivirus and antispyware check its enabled along with anything else that takes your fancy

1326666 2013-02-08 21:32:00 Thanks guys. I have now ticked those items in Wainui's answer and bingo the download stopped at 99% with the warning, so things are now working fine smithie 38 (6684)
