1326345 2013-02-03 23:38:00 Problem with my 4 yr old system with ASUS P5Q Pro mobo, Cooler Master 550W PSU, E8400 CPU, pr Corsair DDR2 1066 2GB RAM sticks system running Win8 .

Couple of days ago it went totally unresponsive with no video, kbd or mouse . On restart, found the BIOS had been reset .

Later, had a situation where it wouldn't boot . Win 8 did a 'repair' and then system restore but it still wouldn't boot properly . Switched off couple of BIOS 'Tools' then it rebooted OK . Checked mobo bty at 3 . 2V so that should be OK as a new one is only 3 . 24 .

Yesterday, I ran memtest but that caused the machine to reboot after about 4 sec .

Removed second RAM stick and all runs fine with memtest showing no errors . Replaced that one with the other one and that is fine too .

Long and short, it will only run properly with one RAM stick, but it doesn't matter which one .

Running short of ideas . Funnily enough, I came across a Dell machine last year that suddenly decided it would only run one RAM stick, as well .

Unfortunately I don't have another modern PSU to sub in but all the voltages charted with OCCT looked stable .

Another idea is that maybe an electrolytic is drying out affecting the memory bus stability .

Anyone got any experience/probable answers?

Better get onto Computer Lounge site, I guess!!

1326346 2013-02-04 01:01:00 Motherboard. pctek (84)
1326347 2013-02-04 02:34:00 Yea, my thinking, too.

Having to get re-oriented with new mobos and CPUs! Thinking of an I5. The microATX mobos are cheap. Seem capable enough for my usage, though.

Cheers.

1326348 2013-02-04 06:06:00 I'd suspect a RAM problem. I had this very motherboard: four DDR slots, correct. 1 & 3 were black, and 2 & 4 were yellow, right?

Asus will try to run as dual channel, if you put the RAM in alternate slots. It will run in single channel, if you use adjoining slots, hence the colour coding.

1326349 2013-02-04 23:44:00 These darn computers will be the life of me. This machine is now running fine in dual channel mode. This morning I put the two sticks in single mode in the second set of slots and it worked, as expected. I next moved them to their original yellow sockets and they worked fine. I give up. Perhaps my almost pulling the trigger on replacement parts last night did the trick!

I did very little with BIOS settings while experimenting. AI Tweaker now has only two settings other than auto. The RAM voltage is set to 2.1V (correct for Corsair) and I set the speed to 1066.

Time will tell whether there is still some underlying issue.

Thanks for replies pctek and Dragonfly.

1326350 2013-02-05 00:51:00 The contacts can degrade over time and pulling them out and plugging them back in can clean them enough to fix problems sometimes. dugimodo (138)
1326351 2013-02-05 01:08:00 That's true but they had a few insertions yesterday and they would run fine in single mode from any socket. Just one of those things I'll never really know I guess.

Cheers.

1326352 2013-02-14 01:05:00 Not surprisingly, I have subsequently had freezes with stop 1A MEMORY_MANAGEMENT notifications. I have tested it with another PSU and problem is the same so definitely looks like mobo (good pick pctek!). Machine runs with one RAM stick but not two.

New mobo, cpu and RAM arrived yesterday and got installed last night. Whew, everything went exceedingly well. Just booted it up with current HDD and Windows 8 took a few minutes to look around and update devices and started up with absolutely no problems.

UEFI boot screen a bit different from the old BIOS screen. Looks good, though.

I'm now a happy camper, especially as my OS is now re-activated!
