112042 2003-01-08 10:56:00 My PC is a Gateway 500 celeron it goes very well and I have had it 3 years it has 128 mb RAM I was thinking of adding more since memory is cheap at the present and adding a bigger hard drive mine in only 10gbs .do you think it is worth spending the money on this system or should I sell this off and start again ,I have very few system crashes and run windows 98se.The computer has the Go Back programme with I think is excellent if I dont like using PCs without this programme.I was thinking of changing the monitor to a 19inch AOC or thie Dick Smith special at about $392 a good price for that size screen.I do a lot of scanning and photo work.Any comments Thanks kings (2729)
112043 2003-01-08 11:08:00 Here is something everyone MUST know when buying ANY computer component, shop around. To save you time here is the BEST site when buying anything inside New Zealand www.pricespy.co.nz this will save you hours and I admire those who made and maintain it.

And your PC

RAM
Well….. you don’t really need the RAM, I know it’s a ***** when some ones says that but the performance will not be worth the money

Hard Drive
A new HD is the way to go because if you sell the computer you can keep you new HD and put it in your new PC

Monitor
Duno look at price spy its up to you

112044 2003-01-08 11:15:00 if the system is doing everything you need it tio do then why bother wasteing money on a new one.

adding another 128meg of ram will make it run nice. if you are running short on space then a new hardrive would be good. you can use the old one as a backup drive and the new one should be a whole lot quicker as well.

i'm a veiwsonic fan but also philips monitors are quite good.

112046 2003-01-08 11:19:00 are you talking the aoc 19" flat or the curved. i have the flat and i think its the best moniter for the best price. 1152x864 @100 hz its so good and cheep 2 if u mean the aoc 19" curved u r being ripped off u can get the flat for that price. Dse isnt the best place to buy computer parts they are normally the most expencive of the bunch if you are in auckland try www.qmb.co.nz or www.c-l.co.nz they usually have the best prices mcatley (662)

coff, pull your head in!

If this machine meets your requirements then I would upgrade it.

You can get 128meg RAM for $35 ish from http://www.dtconline.co.nz/
Seagate 40g harddrive for around $180 from http://www.uptech.co.nz/

112048 2003-01-08 12:21:00 Yeah, you can find pc parts cheap if you shop around online, Pricespy is a good start and from there you can learn which shops offer the best deals. Check out every component tho, don't assume just because the shop with the cheapest monitor has the cheapest ram. I found DSE expensive for ram.
I haven't regretted adding extra ram to either of my pc's. Made a big difference. Again, you need to check the prices, some shops can be twice the price for certain types of memory, although your pc probably uses sdram which is pretty cheap everywhere now.

A positive attitude will bring wonders to this thread lol. Now that i have that out of my system.

Mr Upgrader. Do you wish to use your computer for the same applications that you run now? What are your uses for this computer?

112050 2003-01-08 18:59:00 You won't get much money from selling off your current system and starting again. It may be a bit slow compared to today's machines but if you are happy with it then an upgrade will be fine.

If you do a lot of scanning and photo work you should notice quite an improvement by adding another 128MB stick of RAM so that will be well worthwhile. You will also benefit from a larger hard drive since photos and graphics are space hogs. Like someone else said, use your current hard drive as a backup. A new hard drive will be able to be transferred to a new system in the future.

Having a 19" monitor would be wonderful but do remember that they require a large sturdy desk to support them. They don't look quite as big in the shop as they do when you get them home! I have no idea about the AOC but personally I would get the best monitor I could afford as it can be passed on to your next system when you do get it. It pays to compare different ones in a shop if you can. Do remember though that your current graphics card may have an effect on how good a new monitor may look on your PC.

112051 2003-01-08 20:26:00 Thanks people for your comments, very helpful sort of confirmed what my way of thinking.Yes the new monitor (if I get it would be the flat screen AOC) my current system has an intergrated graphics card and works very well(if I have been on the internet looking at pictures I can get up to over 20 pages held in the system meaning I can page forward and back if I have just come of the internet) I think my graphics are OK .Yes I will continue to do photo work with the pc and often listen to streaming audio . kings (2729)
