112036 2003-01-08 10:42:00 Will someone please tell me what the above message means and whether it is something I need to fix on my PC. It appears on the first boot up screen just under the list of drives. Only noticed it today after fitting another 512 m of ram, but it may have been there before. Danger (287)
112037 2003-01-08 10:47:00 you have a 40wire ide cable connecting which will limit the hardrive to ata33, or the plug is a bit loose making it "think" you only have a 40wire cable. tweak'e (174)
112038 2003-01-08 10:49:00 It means exactly what it says.
One (or both) your IDE cables (the big flat ones that connect your HDD/CD drived to the motherboard) are 40 core when your motherboard supports 80 core.

The upshot is you are running that channel at lower speed than its capable of (66 instead of 100)

If the cable only feeds CD drives its not a biggie.

You can tell the difference, the 80 core are finer, the 40 core are much like the cable on the floppy drive.

About $16 for a flat one or $32 for a flash round one.

btw 40 wire restricts it to 33. for 66/100/133 you need to have a 80wire (note- dvd drives are often ata66 so a 80wire cable for the dvd drive will help)

112040 2003-01-08 11:14:00 Ok thanks, I may have swapped some cables around with my old pc when using different HD's and changing the CD and DVD drives over. Will take both apart and fit the better (finer) ones to the grunter tomorrow. Danger (287)
112041 2003-01-08 11:19:00 Yeah, just had a look, swapping them now. Thanks guys. Danger (287)
