112592 2003-01-10 00:44:00 As well as an ok machine, I have an old 66Mhz computer running Windows 95. Recently a friend supplied me with an old 14.4k modem. (Sorry, don't know much about it) anyway, I tried to connect to Xtra with it. I managed to get it to connect up but it disconnects after 4-5 seconds.

Anything I can do about this?

112593 2003-01-10 00:53:00 Hey

I had this problem with Win95 as well, so a few things you want to check out:
1 - get Telecom to do a Line-check for you, as this can be the cause of bad connections (was for me)
2 - Get The Following patches for Win95
Windows 95 Y2k Update (www.microsoft.com)
Windows 95 SP1 (www.microsoft.com)
Microsft Dialup Networking 1.3 (www.microsoft.com)
Dialup Networking Security Update (www.microsoft.com)
WinSock 2 Update (www.microsoft.com)

These should fix your problems

112594 2003-01-10 00:58:00 get an old 33k modem. a fair few of these are floating about and are great for rural uses. however with a 66mhz pc usage on the net is going to be limited. choose your browwser and setup wisely. I have a 70mhz here which is really only useable when overclocked to 120mhz. flash animation brings it to its knees. tweak'e (174)
112595 2003-01-10 01:49:00 Yesterday I uninstalled my proxy (long story involving computer seizing up and crashing), went to connect, it would dial then disconnect as soon as it went to validate the user.

Turned out uninstalling the proxy had removed all protocols from the network. Reinstalling the protocols meant I can now connect.

Start, settings, control panel, network - check that the adaptor is showing AND the tcp/ip protocol for that adaptor.

My second problem is slow connection speed with frequent disconnections. Have now established it's a line fault and Telecom will visit within 24 hours.

Hope this helps.

112596 2003-01-10 08:28:00 I suspect it is not actually completing the connection although it may look as if it is.
Double-click on My Computer, then double-click on Dial-Up Networking.
Right-click on the Xtra connection icon and choose Properties.
Click the Configure button.
Check the Max speed showing, set it to the one lower than 38400.
