2003-01-10 21:19:00 | Hi, I deceided to give WS_FTP LE a go after recommendations from you all. I have run into a small problem, during setup there are instructions to add a desktop shortcut to your site (orcon), however i seem unable to add the shortcut following the path given in the instructions. I am using xp pro and wondered if it was somthing to do with that?? Has anybody else run into this?? In paticular using Xp?? The path i am trying to use is: "C:\Program Files\WS_FTP\WS_FTP95.exe"-p Orcon -s Orcon: I have probably just misread the instructions and entered the path wrong. When trying to use the shortcut i create i get this message: 501 invalid number of arguments.! Transfer failed for from (my site). The instructions i used are Here (www.ftpplanet.com)

2003-01-10 21:35:00 | The -s switch is for defining the source file(s) to be transferred. Have a look at the help within ws_ftp - [command line section] | wuppo (41) | |
2003-01-10 23:02:00 | O . k then, sorry, i obviously misunderstood what i was doing :8}, being new to this . I thought i was making a desktop shortcut which would e . g at the moment i have a desktop shortcut to ws ftp le, then i go o . k on Orcon and connect . I thought the shortcut would/was to bypass that part so i would just go/connect to the site i put in (Orcon in my case) and you could have/make a shortcut to each of your sites (if you have more than one) I hope that makes sense?? >>>3As per the instructions, using Ipswitch site name instead or Orcon: With WS_FTP LE, all the information needed to establish a connection with an FTP server (URL, User ID, Password, etc . ), is stored in an FTP site 'Profile' . These 'Profiles' are saved within your WS_FTP LE directory and are used every time you use WS_FTP LE to connect to an FTP site . This tutorial teaches you how to create Desktop shortcuts to these FTP site 'Profiles', allowing you to launch WS_FTP LE and automatically connect to your favorite FTP sites from a single icon . The "-p Ipswitch" is just the profile name The "-s Ipswitch" is also the profile name Be sure to end the line with a colon ':' To create shortcuts to other profiles, simply substitute the new profile folder name and profile name: "C:\Program Files\WS_FTP\WS_FTP95 . exe" -p profilename -s profilename: So what exactly does this shortcut do?? Start transferring files automatically from a specific folder that you put in the shortcut?? Sorry for my lack of knowledge but i am a little confused now? Thanks for the help :-) **The connection is working fine though .

2003-01-11 02:26:00 | Apart from what it does, you do need a space before the first hyphen inside the quoted string: " -p ...". Otherwise, it will be joined to the ".exe", and give error messages like "invalid number of arguments". :D | Graham L (2) | |
2003-01-11 02:41:00 | The command line switches are designed to allow you to connect, transfer nominated files and disconnect automatically. If you just want to connect to manually transfer files, just include the -p Orcon (profile switch) in your shortcut. WS_Ftp will then open with your Orcon profile and wait for you to connect. | wuppo (41) | |
2003-01-11 04:41:00 | Thanks Wuppo & Graham, so if i do as Wuppo suggests and remove the " -s orcon:", it takes me to exactly where i am when clicking my normal ws ftple shortcut, so there is basically no point in doing it :D, but if i had more than one site loaded it would be o . k :-) . >>2The command line switches are designed to allow you to connect, transfer nominated files and disconnect automatically . If you just want to connect to manually transfer files, just include the -p Orcon (profile switch) in your shortcut . WS_Ftp will then open with your Orcon profile and wait for you to connect . So if i want to set the shortcut up the way shown in the instructions, and as wuppos says so it will connect, transfer nominated files and disconnect automatically - where do i put these files (nominated files) so they will be transferred automatically and then disconnect when i hit the shortcut icon (if i can get it to work!) . As per the instructions it says put Orcon (or whatever the profile name) or { -s Orcon:} - why does it say put Orcon there??? I just don't get that bit??? If - >>2The -s switch is for defining the source file(s) to be transferred . I have looked all through the help on using the shortcut and the main thing it says is set it up like instructed (the shortcut) and: "Congratulations, you're done! Double-click on the icon and you'll automatically open WS_FTP LE and connect to the FTP site!" And that above quote is rather misleading on the shortcut then, as it says click the shortcut and it will automatically Open and connect to the ftp site ?:| - - It should therefore say it will connect, transfer nominated files and disconnect automatically . Shouldn't it?? ?:|, which added to the confusion i am having about it :_| Can't find anything in help on where i put the nominated files, but once again i did note that it says this and i am using xp pro?: WS_FTP LE for Windows 95/98/NT (X86 Version) Please excuse my ignorance guys as i am still learning, thats why i would like a better understanding of how this shortcut works now . Thanks wuppo and graham, your help and patience are most appreciated :-) and i would be lost without the knowledge you guys provide and share, so sorry to be a pain in the butt . Its just i like to understand what i am doing and where and why i am going wrong, paticularly when i have followed instructions .
