113321 2003-01-13 04:17:00 I am about to set up a small office network of 4 PCs running Windows XP and Win 2K.

Could someone suggest a reliable 4-port hub (<$100) and Network Interface Cards (<$50 each), please.

Cheers

113322 2003-01-13 18:24:00 Hey

QMB (http://www . qmb . co . nz) have pretty good nics if your in the Auckland region, as do DSE, and although you do pay more for DSE's cards, your know your gauranteed service should anything not work properly .

Have you checked out PriceSpy (http://www . pricespy . co . nz) for stuff like this (more Pricing), as most NIC's are pretty reliable and most companies will take back a product if it's not working . The same would go for Hubs .

113323 2003-01-13 21:50:00 A Dick Smith mailer in my letterbox this morning has PCI Network cards for $17 XH7975 and also 8 port Switch for $89 XH6767. Andrew B (867)

113325 2003-01-15 08:15:00 Go for a Switch though, and not a Hub, as the speed deteriorates with each PC added to the network when you use a Hub. A switch however is not affected, and at the cost of an extra couple of bucks for the 4-8 port selection, its well worth it :-)

Dont forget to go 100MBPS too :-)

113327 2003-01-16 04:56:00 Just upgraded my lan from a 10Mbps hub to one of Dickys $89 8 port 100Mbps switches & the speed difference is great.
At $89.00 I doubt you'll get a better deal anywhere, probably not the best quality around but hopefully time will prove me wrong.
I always try to stick with 3com NIC's as they will work with any OS & are the best quality, but I do have Realteks (ex Dickys again) in 2 of my machines & they have given trouble free service for over a year now.
If you do buy Realtek NIC's make sure the chip has 8319c or is it 8139c written on it. Avoid anything else as they have produced a couple of duds in the past.
TradeMe is a good place to pick up 3com cards as new ones will set you back in excess of $100 ea.
