114146 2003-01-15 10:36:00 Have just networked two machines XP& 98 & am using ICS, 98 connecting through XP.I was intending to ditch the firewall on the 98 machine but have noticed that internet traffic to 98 doesn’t show in Zone Alarm on XP.I have the network in the trusted zone should it be in the internet zone ? I’m sure this can be done, can anyone point me in the right direction. Also NAV auto protect does this need to be installed on both machines. GaryK (1375)

The reason your Windows98 internet traffic won't show in XP is because Internet Connection Sharing manages the Windows 98 Internet traffic. So, because all internet requests from 98 get sent to ICS who manages it, the programs aren't listed as they themselves aren't requesting direct access to the internet, rather access through a proxy/gateway server.

If you have the money and resources for 2 copies of NAV, then go right ahead and install them on the 2 machines as this will make it easier for scanning, however, if you want another alternate solution, you could just install it on XP, share C:\ drive on Windows 98 with full access, and then get NAV to scan that drive from XP.
Alternatively, if you don't want to buy 2 licenses for NAV, and don't want virus scanning across your network, you could always download AVG (www.grisoft.com f57) which is a free virus scanner

114149 2003-01-15 20:15:00 which Zone Alarm? the free ver,ZAF, dosn't support ICS so you have to lower the protection to allow it to work. however is fine on the client machine. if you want full protection you will need to get the pro ver ,ZAP. tweak'e (174)
