114083 2003-01-15 09:38:00 Hey

i was in town this morning looking at computer magazines seeing if they had linux...
but i had a thought...what attracts u to buy the magazine...
coz i saw like 5 different ones..
pcworld....nz and australian...linxu....apc...netguide...among others...

is it the price that attracts u? or wats on the cd?...or u being loyal by being on this site and having 2 buy the magazine...or..u thought u'd try one magazine and ur hooked since?

I get a lot each month and the differenct flavours is something interesting when you read lotsa different ones each month!

*Wants the latest PCW to come out... :)*

114086 2003-01-15 10:05:00 Tried the rest, read the best.

PCW has the best mix of relevant and readable information pitched at the average computer user, plus a cover CD that consistently provides a raft of interesting and/or useful software.

The only thing missing is the service packs to the major operating systems, W2k in particular to save download time.

Cheers

114088 2003-01-15 10:16:00 Content & cover disk.
Years ago I got the US version of PCWorld but didn't find it very objective the moved to PCPro from England and have found the content quality has dropped but they have a good cover disk ( a little expensive but the programs on the coverdisk make up for it). The NZ PCWorld is tops though. Interesting content, good cover disk and good price.

114089 2003-01-15 10:23:00 Article and CD mainly. There are some I get religiously and others just on the odd occasion. -=JM=- (16)
114090 2003-01-15 18:54:00 I read PCWorld . . . no particular reason - although I tried some others and didn't like them, whereas PCWorld has some excellent articles and reviews .

Also, don't forget that due to a new Microsoft licensing scheme or something like that, PC Magazines aren't allowed to put Microsoft Service Patches and Updates on their conver-discs anymore . . .
Well, that's what I heard .

The WinXP Service Pack is available in at least one magazine - APC, Dec 2003 issue, I believe. If service packs are no longer to be on mag CDs, this will be bad news. WinXP SP1 took AGES to download, then I saw it all on the APC CD.

114092 2003-01-15 19:13:00 Getting NZ PCW delivered a la snail mail is a big plus for me, along with the competitive annual subscription. Otherwise I look for what is on the cover CDs as the main factor.

One gripe about NZ PCW is the awful cover images. Snarling dogs, and other yuk photos. Have a look at last year's covers and see how many come across in a positive light. Hmmmnn.... I guess the marketing people figure that yuk images sell more mags. Now I wonder what this says about PCW readers, or, the marketing people?
