2003-01-15 09:34:00 | Hey! I found this in the latest APC (Australian Personal Computer) magazine...got given this 2 me as a friend got it thinkint it'd help with his mac computer but no.. I wanna defrag my hard drive and knowing from past attempts..they take forever...restarting and all.. but i found this "fix" as a registry file.. to use it, copy the following (without the ~~~~..only did that to keep it in 1 place...) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ RegEdit 4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnceEx] "Flags"=dword:000000003 "Title"="Defrag at startup" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnceEx\Defrag] "Cmd"="||DEFRAG.EXE/ALL" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ok thats it (but aint sure whats going in after " in "Cmd"="__) as it looks like || to me but it mite be II??? OK...u do that whole thing in between ~~~ in a plaintext file exactly as shown then save as DEFRAG.REG and when i wanna use it...just click on it and when asked "are u sure u wanna add this file to registry" say yes... then after applying fix...reboot and then it will run defragmenter... BUT...i wanna know...will this actually work?...also...about the word that goes in after "Cmd"="___ as asked earlier... If anyone here has APC January 2003 its on page 106 I also hope u guys learnt something if u didnt know u can do that :-D

2003-01-15 10:11:00 | Why on earth would anybody want to defrag at every start-up and delay access to their computer? Provided you defrag regularly and either do it in safe mode or use the likes of PowerDefrag it doesn't take very long. Just remember to run scandisk before defragging or the odd file might get lost if defrag splits it up due to corrupt data. Cheers Billy 8-{)

2003-01-15 10:17:00 | BillyT, The purpose of the registry key RunOnceEx is that the command pointed in that key will run at the next boot of the PC and after completing the command will automatically remove itself from the registry... therefore after completing the defrag the rest of the startup items will complete running and you will have your normal pc now. The purpose of the reg file is to double-click on it when you want to do a defrag at the next boot. Babe.

2003-01-15 10:33:00 | Aha! All is revealed, but I'd still prefer to run scandisk first. Could this be given a run once registry treatment perhaps? Cheers Billy 8-{)

2003-01-15 10:45:00 | BillyT, The command that can be inserted in the registry key RunOnceEx can be a Batch/Command file... therefore you can put whatever commands you like (I guess within reason) in the batch file to run sequentially. Babe.

2003-01-15 18:21:00 | You could also try a program like BatchRun to do something like that . Get it to run DiskCleanup, Scandisk then Defrag . And then you can just double click on it when you want it to go . Still I'd be tempted to try and find a shutdown command that will reboot the system into SafeMode first or a proggy that will kill all applications except for explorer . exe and a few others - it just means scandisk won't complain when it's finding out somethings constantly writing to the disk CyberChuck

2003-01-15 20:10:00 | Supposedly, which is probably why Babe said: > The command that can be inserted in the registry key RunOnceEx can > be a Batch/Command file... therefore you can put whatever commands > you like (I guess within reason) in the batch file to run sequentially. So, therefore the higher up it is in the registry list for loading, the earlier it runs? - but don't forget that even if Defrag does run first, Windows could still write to the disk for virtual ram while it loads the other proggies. Don't forget that just because Scandisk runs first, it doesn't mean that all other proggie's wont boot - it may just take longer CyberChuck
