114104 2003-01-15 22:47:00 Usually an article that takes my interest & getting Whitcolls vouchers 4 xmas helps. GaryK (1375)
114105 2003-01-15 23:08:00 I sometimes read NZ PCWorld, but personally, I like PC Authority the most. They have a well balanced content of news, reviews, hardware testing, software, games, feature articles, and their Real World Computing section is nice too. PCA also included Win XP SP1, IE6 SP1, and Win2K SP3, and the then latest version of WMP9 on their December coverdisc.

APC is good, and they seem to be the mag that includes the most Linux distros on coverdiscs.

Australian PC User is generally good, but not as good as PCA or APC.

Then there's PC PowerPlay, who combine games, news, and hardware reviews with some excellent humour on their screenshot captions, along with general feature articles, and an excellent cover CD (DVD option also available) that has many game demos, trailers, and some useful apps. It has to be the best mag in NZ for PC gamers.

I'd say that's why MS don't want users distributing patches and updates for their OS' - because [supposedly] doesn't WindowsUpdate check your OS' registration key? - and by having it available on CD, it defeats the purpose of Checking the CD Key . However saying that, it's not hard to say your a corporate administrator and want to download the patches seperately - as I doubt MS would check your registration key then, due to Corporate Administrators downloading the patches onto their Linux fileservers and so forth

114107 2003-01-16 00:48:00 I used to buy NZ pc world religiously but now only one or two copies a year. In my opinion nzpcw doesn't go into enough depth on most tech matters and reviews of computers and hardware lack substance, real benchmarking and are quite superficial. I enjoy getting a cover cd, if it contains useful apps/software but it is not a major issue. I buy PC authority, APC, PC user and Atomix based on content, especially atomix. It never has cover cds but they get into some serious depth and the writing is humerous and intelligent.
Having said that the F1 forum is outstanding, With intelligent and interesting contributors and always a first stop when the comp goes online.
Will now duck for cover and await the flak

114108 2003-01-16 00:58:00 Hey - You're entitled to your opinion, and it was expressed in a calm and non-threatening manner :)

I think that Linux reveiws are always good . . I see one with info on Linux on the Front Cover of the mag and I'll think mroe seriously into buying it .

I think there is becoming a bit of an uproar (In a good way) about linux, as it has now become possible for a lot of people to switch over to using it, and the satisfaction gained from knowing you've done something special with your PC is quite good :)

There are becoming more XP articles in PCW - But I think Id like to see some more Linux articles . . . . The arguement was there were less 95/98/NT and even ME articles, as they're no longer really being sold . . whereas XP is new and a lot of people want to switch to it .
I think that there is possibly quite a number out there who would like to switch to Linux too, but dont wanna admit it .

Disclaimer - Im not trying to convert people to linux in saying this - just stating my views :)

Cheers

There's the alarm . . . :(

114109 2003-01-16 01:27:00 The layout (IMHO) of PC World is excellent. Most American magazines have always ( always , as in remembering back about 50 odd years and not just computer mags either) mixed up ads with reading matter so with a casual opening it's difficult to see the wood for the ads, or even finding the real reading matter. Unfortunately, too many Australian computer mags are aping the Yanks too, or so it seems. Terry Porritt (14)
114110 2003-01-16 01:36:00 I am seeing that quite a few ppl here are having "yuk" written over coverpages...
y dont pcworld consider a competition of some sort...for readers to make the coverpage...i'm pretty sure that would create alot of interest......but me just wondering...the only lil problem is...they would needa know what..the issue that month would be about and maybe that would spoil some people's eagerness and looking forward to whats coming out...by finding out what it is..when it comes out..not before it does......and yeah...maybe a selection of 10-15 people per month...(selected by the ppl in bookshops or thru subscription service) by giving them a evelope saying they had been selected to create a coverpage blha blha and the issue will be about blah blah...and give each person a small gift for completing or something...
Maybe this way u mite get more readers :-D

And on cds...do pcworld take reader requests?....maybe u do but i've not noticed...like in the latest APC there has been requiests of adaware...icqplus....

Also...in APC theres like this mega space user of having every issue of the 2002 year in PDF format...excluding cds...i thought that'd be cool as a sort of "e-book" but yeah it does use up alot of time to get this done...

just a few ideas there :D...am sure heaps of ppl here would have heaps :D

114111 2003-01-16 01:40:00 Absolutely Terry; I agree about "typical" American mags . The layout of NZPCW is great from that point of view .

I also hate hate hate all of the inserts, tear outs, subscription forms, etc that are included in many yank mags . My first task is to go through before I start reading and tear them out and bin them . Grrrrr . That includes a quality mag like National Geographic . I usually end up with a little pile on the floor that includes the wrapper and assorted detritus, then settle back to read in peace .

NZPCW gets my vote for reasonably sympathetic ad placement (and I do refer to the ads when I am after something in particular - it is one of the many reasons why I keep back copies) .

My preference is to go ad hunting when I am actually considering buying something (eg a DVD player as at present), rather than being bombarded all the time . Anything I can do to reduce clutter is good at my advancing and increasingly crabby age .

Needless to say I use the mute button during commercial breaks on the gogglebox . . . And I also run The Proxomitron to screen out pop ups, pop unders, and most ads . . . Sad, ne?

114112 2003-01-16 01:46:00 I just remembered another reason why I started buying NZPC World - as a long time Mac user, reluctantly having to shift over to Gate's world as a result of client demand, I started looking at computer mags to help my shift - I needed the educational input from mags .

I appreciated NZPCW's acknowledgement of Macs, and the occasional hardware and software reviews . I think its editorial policy acknowledges the different platforms and OS's; perhaps not as well as one would wish, but still they weren't in a PC ghetto, unlike the ChCh Press computer column at the time . Seemed to suggest open mindedness - a good indicator of overall editorial policy .
