114093 2003-01-15 19:37:00 There aren't really very many NZ produced PC mags that are worth giving the time of day - aside from PCW & Netguide (though I have gone off the latter, as I found that a lot of what is in there has already been covered in PCW, and there is a lot of stuff which is irrelevant to me). I'm an avid reader of the industry ones, also, such as Reseller News and Computerworld, and they're fantastic for learning about new technologies coming out and various companies in trouble :D

I don't really give other mags more than a cursory glance in Borders when I go in, they all seem so cluttered. And who wants to support the Aussies??

I'm not going through my entire collection - just ones that catch my eye

The Novemeber 2002 piccy wasn't too bad - Quick Fix's for computers, well if you can't fix it, no doubt you will be angry.

Septmeber 2002 - Data Saviours.. PCWorld got told off about that in their October Issue, as someone thought they were comparing the image to Jesus Christ or something like that. Didn't offend me personally though.

August 2002 - Snarling Dog - that's the "Protect Your PC" issue. Now what's one thing that can be associated with home security - big bad mean dogs! - you see them in the movies in the car junk yards, so what was wrong with this one when he's holding a PC, and therefore protecting it?

May 2002 - the Alien with PDA's strapped to his arms.. weird, but not yuk

4 issues out of the 11 they do in a year? and only two of them has offended people - should I go through 2001 or 2000?
Although, i do agree, having a subscription to PCWorld is an excellent bonus, and, I have no problems paying for it

114096 2003-01-15 20:19:00 Hi everyone,

Regarding MS service packs and cover discs, the chaps at MS NZ are generally happy for us to run their patches but they seem to have little or no say in the matter as all legal issues seem to go through Redmond. MS have in the past been cagey about letting third party vendors (that's us) distribute their software (even patches and service packs). I think they like to keep a close record of exactly who is downloading what...and MS do love their EULA's as anyone who has ever installed even the tiniest peice of MS software will know.

Having said all that...we have managed to secure permission to run the Windows XP service pack 1 on the February CD. So there you go.

And to mikebartnz....I think you'll find the quality of PCPro UK dropped when I left them about two years ago to work for PCW NZ ;)

As for PCW covers...I personally thought Dec 2001/Jan 2002 wasn't too bad...

114097 2003-01-15 20:48:00 I guess the marketing people figure that yuk images sell more mags. Now I wonder what this says about PCW readers, or, the marketing people?

"Marketing people" have nothing to do with PCW covers. That's the editor and designer's job.

114098 2003-01-15 20:50:00 There are two magazines I buy each & every month on sight(without browsing the contents) and thats NZPCWorld and Q magazine . Both are extremely readable cover to cover - each and every article .

Naah . . I love them all :-)
Especially the latest game demos!

Ive gotta say though, that the CD I've used THE ABSOLUTE MOST would have to be the October 2002 Disc . . . .

Thanks guyz, its become such a valuable asset, and I've made copies of it tons of times to give my friends a chance with knoppix (For those who were folly enough not to buy the mag ;))

114100 2003-01-15 21:29:00 I bought quite a few issues, and I really liked the consistent quality . local relevance, product announcements, and hints . I then subscribed once it was obvious I was going to continue to buy it from the shop, to get the benefit of snail mail delivery .

I learn something new from every issue - it is the articles and hints I go for most, but it is also good to keep abreast of product developments .

The cover CD is not what attracts me to the mag - I haven't found the CDs of much interest to me personally - I doubt I have even looked at the last two or three .

I have learned heaps both from this site and from the mag . They complement each other really . I always go for local mags (apart from National Geographic) out of loyalty, but also because there is nothing more frustrating than reading about something in an overseas mag and not being able to find out local prices and distributors .

114101 2003-01-15 21:40:00 Yes, I find it awesome to check ouut how low PC pricing is becoming, and not have to worry about trying to then convert it from aus. to NZ dollars :)

The quality of input into the mag is also something that keeps my comin back to PCW...

Although, If there's a feature article in another mag (Such as Lycoris on Aus. PCW) then I'll go for that.. I reakon the front cover can really sell the mag for me!

Linux Journal (www.linuxjournal.com) is pretty good. Its expensive though (~$18). It's more for the advanced Linux user but I find it very good. I used to buy netguide, but nothing in there interests me any more - its just to simple.

I usually buy a computer magazine if it has something that I'm interested in or that I want to learn about (eg, Linux Journal have an article about replacing exchange mail servers and they have an article on the SGI Altix 3000)
