| 114285 | 2003-01-15 21:34:00 | Good afternoon all I have win98se on a 270Mb drive (my previous drive died) and I am a little short of space as in I have only 20-30 mb of spare space on the harddrive, I want to upgrade the browser from 5 to 6 (I need IE as my bank PSIS doesnt like netscape 6.X) but as I am already get a lot of messages, such as "your system is dangerously low on resources" and also the "your hard drive is full, please delete stuff" while surfing the net I think IE6 would only exacerbate the problem, unless I can get some more room on the harddrive, so what files are unnecessary and can be removed System specs are P166 64 mb ram 270 Mb harddrive win98se and yes I have looked at 98Lite but as i need IE, it doesnt seem to be overly useful, the reason i need IE6 is that I am unable to enter the netscape mail website owing to a "missing site ID" I have checked my cookie settings, security setting s everything like that and as i had no problem with IE6 on another machine I am guessing that this may solve the problems Thanks in advance for any help |

Id say possibly jsut too small.. I managed to do what you're wanting on a 365MB HDD no worries, but that's a whole lot larger :) There are also some cab files in the Windows Directory... If you can - Copy them across a LAN or something and back again once you've installed, as IE 6 uses a fair amount for temp install files :) Im not sure if you'll be able to do it though.. But its worth a shot Cheers Chilling_Silence |

You can go to control panel > Add Remove Software and get rid of everything you don't need. Don't forget to remove unwated windows componants while you're there. BTW, you should be able to get hold of a 500mb to 1gb hard drive for next to nothing. www.te.co.nz or http: |

NS 6 did have a lot of bugs though, try updating to NS 7 Some secure (https) web sites are not TLS compatible. TLS is the new version of SSL. If you are having trouble reaching a particular secure web site, try turning off TLS (Privacy and Security/SSL) Also make sure you have Java enabled - Preferences/Advanced Check also the info Here ( www.ufaq.org) |

Clear cookies, temp and temp internet folders. Gut your fonts down to only system fonts and the ones u cant do without. Backup crucial data first If you are still desperate and don't mind taking a performance hit compress hardrive best I've managed on a functional light (not 98 lite) new install of 98se with IE5 is approx 220 megs so I'm guessing its still not going to happen for you unless you do compress |
