Compatibility isnt an issue as you can just save the file from them in both formats. Just go to the save menu and in the 'save file type as' box select Word 97-2000 these files are also compatable with with Office XP.
I have both of the programs and would really like to know! ;)

114734 2003-01-17 21:18:00 HI Chris

Word has far more formatting features than the Works word processor. If you do much in word processing, then once you have used Word you would find if difficult to go back to the Works one.
For work I have been buying the Works Suite that comes with Word as well. Not expensive at under $200 and most of our users don't need Access etc anyway - just Word.

114735 2003-01-17 22:11:00 I endorse falvrez's comments. I used Works exclusively for years but once I tried Word I just couldn't go back. Even the learning process was tolerable for the improved formatting available.

Incidentally, although cross-compatibility can be achieved via RTF files, formatting will often be mangled if the recipient program has different formatting options. Sometimes it works a dream, sometimes you have to reformat after receipt. Font size and indents seem particularly vulnerable.

114736 2003-01-17 22:25:00 The newer versions of Works have dropped the old Works wordprocessor and replaced it with the full version of Word, so MS must have thought it was less than ideal as well.

114738 2003-01-18 19:18:00 I endorse the above comment about Open Office Org. A friend has a new computer with this installed, and it is excellent and really rivals Word....and......it is free! There are other free programs around, such as Star Office. Do a search on CNET.COM (Download page) and you will find these freebies and more, along with user comments. BTW, Open Office is compatible with Word files. NZ PCW magazine had 4 free word processing programs on a 'cover CD', sometime last year.

Frankly, I would not waste my time with Works. Many people cannot open Works files so sharing files is very frustrating unless you save it in RTF format (fine for basic functions but cannot do tables, columns, etc.).
