114527 2003-01-17 02:54:00 Hi all...

I just brought a 80Gb hard disk (seagate barracuda IV). I have partitioned to 2 drives, and now when i trying to format it to install window, this "Trying to recover allocation x" message keep appearing in the middle of formatting. (where x is just a number). Formatting has been an hour and still havent completed 1 drive. So i assume that this drive is faulty. Am I correct?? Should I take it back to the shop to a new one?

I have a P3 processor. motherboard can detect the 80Bb hard disk.

Thanks :)

114528 2003-01-17 02:58:00 Hey

What it is, is that your drive has some bad/lost clusters
Do you have a Windows Boot disk or access to one? - I would reccomend using this and running Scandisk from it to fix these errors

Have you installed an OS or anything yet? or is the drive still empty? - as if you haven't installed anything then I would consider sending it back under warraunty and getting another one

114529 2003-01-17 03:25:00 Hi cbyerchuck.

I do have a win98 boot floppy. but i can only scan the floppy drive.
there is nothing installed on the hdd yet since it took ages to format, in fact, still going after and its almost 2 hrs now. It just seem that it took ages and I think its a faulty hard drive.

114530 2003-01-17 04:23:00 Sounds like you Hard Drive is fooked. Dragonslayer (512)
114531 2003-01-17 06:36:00 The drive is faulty - just as the previous reply was .

Attempts to recover an allocation unit while formatting indicated bad clusters - a result usually of physical damage .

Neither scandisk - nor its predecessor chkdisk - are able to check an unformatted volume . Nor can utilities such as Norton Disk Doctor .

Use the utilities on the disk included with the drive .

Or take it to from whence it was purchased - without cap in hand .

114532 2003-01-17 16:41:00 follow the previous advice given, then if you get the HDD replaced, on the back of it should be instructions to D/L Seagate drive wizard . it is a program that formats & correctly installs seagate HDD, with partitions if you want them . . Brilliant little program, that makes adding a new HDD for newbies like me(us) easy, just follow the instructions . teddybear (2443)
114533 2003-01-18 08:16:00 I had a Seagate drive set up with Seagate's DiskWizard (I think it was called) which worked very well. Watch out for one point, though. In the version I had, at least, you couldn't boot from a standard boot floppy - it was necessary to make and use a special DiskWizard boot disc. Robin S_ (86)
