114645 2003-01-17 23:04:00 I used to have the same problem before but I think I have solved the problem. Try the following:

1. Before you come out of IE, click Tools/Internet Options
2. In "general" tab, click "delete files", a little window came up
3. Tick the square with "delete all offline contents"
4. Click, OK, OK and you should have all the temp files store in those funny directories "cxji56gy..." emptied (except cookies)

Cheers

114646 2003-01-18 00:14:00 Spider does need to used a couple of times. Have a look in the reg at:
Hikey Current User/Software/Microsoft?Intertnet Explorer/Typed URL's. A few pesky one's stay in there - quite safe to delete.

114647 2003-01-18 01:11:00 For ME you will have to use a DOS boot disk to delete Index.Dat files. Find all the index dat files on your computer and note the full path, then Boot to the DOS prompt using a boot disk, change to the C:\ prompt (type cd\C: then press enter) and enter the command:

del windows\followed by whichever of the paths below leads to the
Index.dat file that you want to erase. e.g

Del windows\profiles\username\history\history.ie5\inde x.dat

If any item in the path has more than 8 letters it has to be reduced to the first six letters followed by ~1 and any spaces must also be removed. For example in option 3 below, "local settings" became "locals~1" and "temporary internet files" became "tempor~1"

In example 4, where the path contains a user name (for example bill gates) this should be entered as \billga~1\

Known index.dat locations in my Win98 installation were:

(1) C:\Windows\Cookies\Index.dat

(2) C:\Windows\History\History.IE5\Index.dat

(3) C:\Windows\Locals~1\Tempor~1\Content.IE5\Index.dat

(4) C:\Windows\Profiles\[user name]\Cookies\Index.dat

(5) C:\Windows\Profiles\[user name]\History\History.IE5\Index.dat

(6) C:\Windows\Tempor~1\Content.IE5\Index.dat

(7) C:\Windows\Applic~1\History\History.IE5\index.dat

Your mileage may vary so check your own paths. You will have to enable "show all" so that you can see most of these files as they are normally hidden and won't show up in explorer. To do this, click on the Windows folder (in Explorer) then go to View>Folder Options>View and check the appropriate items.

If you get a "file not found" response to a known file location, check the command syntax for spelling errors or spaces.

If you don't get this response but you want to check that the file was actually deleted, press F3 (which will bring back your last DOS command) and press enter again. This time you should get "file not found" thus confirming that it has been deleted.

All of the above is best done using a boot disk and batch file. I am still working on "Billy's universal index dat and cookie remover" but one day it will be available for download once I find a kind host. At the moment I am modifying it to save key cookies before deletion then write them back at the end of the process so that I don't have to logon to my favourite sites again. The batch file requires a little customisation before use but that is no more complicated than adding in your own user name before running it.

114648 2003-01-18 08:50:00 Thanks all for your messages.Didn't mean to hijack your thread BEEF!!
Kiwibeat, found and downloaded Window Washer 4.8 and tried it out.Went back to Spider and it now shows no index dat files :-) Thanks for that.
And Susan,I did run Spider and CleanUp many times, and downloaded new Spiders! So this must be one of those machines. So I'll hang on to Spider, even though it doesn't work,at least it lists the files.

114650 2003-01-26 21:44:00 Just in case someone's interested,I've found that only selecting "bleach locked index dat. files" under the tab Int Explorer 6,none of the id files disappear! Only by selecting "Cache,History and Address Bar(TIF) do they go.According to a Spider hunt, that is. And this is using Windows Washer 4.8. Neil McC (178)
114651 2003-01-26 23:22:00 Hi

I followed instructions on the Langa List and created a batch file that effortlessly removes temp files, cached pages, and other areas I want cleaned when run .

Heres an excerpt from the page

Instead, here's a simpler way that's almost as thorough but that requires no access to DOS at all, and that works on virtually all versions of Windows . To differentiate it from the earlier versions of "Clean* . Bat", I'll call this one "CleanXP . Bat," but note that it does NOT REQUIRE XP . In fact, it will work on XP, Win2K, and WinME
