114609 2003-01-17 05:00:00 My computer currently has a registery problem and wants to restart everytime to fix it exept it doesnt fix it and keeps on wanting me to restart the computer to fix it. This has happened to me serveral times and i just formatted the computer to get rid of it. Is there any other way of fixing the problem permantely without having to format again? unknown (2981)
114610 2003-01-17 05:31:00 If you are running win98se (maybe other versions of windows, i don't know) I had the same problem a while ago - the PC boots, and wants to fix the registry.... you fix it, restart, same again.....

You may want to find out about scanreg, i have heard this is an app that can fix reg errors, but I tried that and it didn't help me.

Have you installed any new hardware lately? I ask this because I traced my problem to some faulty ram I had installed. As soon as the old ram was back in - the problem went away, without a re-install...

Craig.

114614 2003-01-17 08:44:00 This info may be of some use:

www.windows-help.net

There is info on scanreg which can restore reg files from backups - if your system has them, else references to knowledge base info from microsoft.

enjoy.

Otherwise, try a search on google for registry fixes and dos tools. I am assuming you cannot load windows?

114615 2003-01-17 12:30:00 If you've installed new ram, that may be the cause of the registry errors... is this the case?

114616 2003-01-17 12:37:00 i got 128mb of ram recently and i spose this message has been occuring since i got it what could i do if it ws the problem? unknown (2981)
114617 2003-01-17 20:38:00 Hmm, try putting back the old ram - it sounds a bit strange I know, but that is what was the problem with my one. However, if you had the reg errors before and fixed them with a re-install I doubt it was the ram, as I was unable to reinstall windows, and got sporadic errors during the boot up memory test.

If you have no errors on that mem test, and you are able to run pretty intensive apps - like install windows, then its not likely to be the ram - but try it anyway, can't hurt.

114618 2003-01-17 22:03:00 It's probably a silly question, but why haven't you simply restored your registry? If you can load windows it can be done from there but if you cant, it can be done from dos (the real dos prompt from the startup options, not a dos window).

For "how to" instructions see FAQ #6 (access at the top right of the F1 window).
