2003-01-18 08:05:00 | "Leave a message about your hardware, software or internet problem" The quote above which appears on the PressF1 home page says it all. My opinion is the forum's for computer related problems/help posts, but it seems to be increasingly headed towards a chat room revolving loosely around the odd computer problem & somewhere to have a bit of a natter on anything from TV programs to posters babies. My intention is not to offend anyone, or post an OT Topic, but surely there are dozens of chat rooms & other forums that these posts can be directed to. A search shows in excess of 1500 OT, O/T posts & that doesn't include posts that barely rate as a computer related problem, but probably make it in as General Discussion. I'm pretty experieced in computer related stuff & like to help out where I can, but certainly don't come here as often nor post as often as I used to since the new look forum was introduced. It's great to have a local forum such as this one, but it just seems to be degenerating into a free for all for any subject that springs to mind. Are my kids right? Am I just a sad lonely old git?

2003-01-18 08:20:00 | > Are my kids right? Am I just a sad lonely old git? Possibly, it depends... Anyway, I guess you could say it's turned into a site where "techies" (or "geeks", or "nerds", or whatever you like to classify yourself as) can talk to each other. As you say, there are thousands of other forums, but not all of them are local, let alone based towards people interested in technology. :D

2003-01-18 08:31:00 | Hey I dunno - I certainly like OT topics as usually the are interesting and provide useless bits or information that i usually never find (for example: Mikes doing all these big fancy words that I can never remember - hence why it [should] be listed under "General Discussion") - General Discussion is an option for threads for a purpose Also - I don't see the problem with OT topics, as it does not (in my opinion) degenerate the quality of the responses and the help you get from users in this forum - as far as I have seen - the quality of responses and replies in this forum is rapidly increasing - hence there should be no need to worry about OT threads Although, in some OT threads topics tend to change quite rapidly off their origional posting, that really doesn't matter due to the fact that it's just people relaxing and having fun, whereas if someone needs help - then the responses are given and [in most circumstances] the thread stays on topic. Well that's my 2 cents worth anyway CyberChuck

2003-01-18 08:33:00 | And what would you like printed on the OT posters Sir?? Ooops sorry, Hey, just ignore the OT posts. We put "OT" there to let those who hate them know that they better not read them, They just show that some of us have other interests, and that some of us are getting to know each other.. Over all the majority of OT posts are participated in by people who also participate in the "on topic" posts. I take it we wont be seeing you in http://chatf1.net.nz then? .Clueless

2003-01-18 22:16:00 | I really enjoy the humour and wit that is usually associated with the OT subjects in this forum . Yes, I know its a computer help forum, but just like the real world, it would be a extremely bleak place if there was no associated humour . BALDY:-)

2003-01-18 22:28:00 | I consider myself to be non-digerati and when I have the time and the inclination visit this site to view any postings that may increase my understanding in areas of particular interest to me . Sometimes visits are fruitful and oftimes are not and the OT postings can sometimes provide an avenue of humour in a serious forum such as this . Personally, I have never had the need to make a posting that requires any input as I find the www to have most, if not all, the answers I need . A recent problem encountered (Windows all of a sudden and for an unknown reason decided to "never recognise" the sound driver on this PC) saw me composing a panic stricken email to the chap in the derelict cave in ChCh and a lot of virtual navel gazing, which in the end solved the problem . However, it is a useful site for many and OT postings can be easily ignored . If your calculations are right, and my calculations are right, 5% of postings have been OT, which makes the remaining 95% more or less On Topic which should be enough content to keep PressF1 enthusiasts content . As a social forum? I can think of more tactile social encounters that are preferable a la kanohi ki te kanohi . Your comments are noted, and if I had one complaint to make it would be that users of this forum cease the M$ bashing . I've used ME for the last 1 . 5 years and apart from the problem above, have not experienced major issues with it . Minor issues? can't think of any . As long as this thing does what I need it to do, then all is tickety boo! As for being a sad lonely ol' git . . . nah, just a purist, so stick with it and don't go changing ! ;)

2003-01-18 22:33:00 | This sad old git may have to rethink. I followed the link you posted Clueless & it led me to a great Linux site. Correct you will never see me at http://chatf1.net.nz but I'll be a regular visitor to www.linux-shop.co.nz thanks for the link. I've always wanted a RedHat cap! HAGD
