115152 2003-01-19 05:15:00 I've posted this in the M2 Volume forum, and currently am awaiting replies. However, I'll post it here too to get some other peoples opinions:
Realistically, would it be possible to get M2 on it's own channel, broadcasting 24/7? Think about things like TVNZ having to broadcast on another frequency, getting the idea past obstacles such as government/ broadcasting authorities, possible rises in broadcasting taxes, and probably getting more presenters.

What do you think? And if it came down to a petition to get this happening, would you care, let alone put your name on the petition?

There's also the possibility that many people might say "if you want 24/7 music, get Sky and watch Juice", but there is always a different atmosphere between different shows.

115154 2003-01-19 05:26:00 The principal offender is the [ pre ] [ /pre ] formatting option but you can overcome that by putting in your own line breaks.

Long URLs don't seem to obey the rules laid down by the programmers either.

115155 2003-01-19 08:41:00 Well I'd sign a petition to get m2 on it's own channel because then they might put some good re-runs on latenight channel2.

I don't like M2, the music they play is too similar all the time. I want re-runs.

115156 2003-01-19 08:57:00 several problems ......

tvnz bought out the music channel (student run, i can't remember the name) then shut it down and brought in MTV which didn't last long and was shut down.

setting up a uhf channel will be costly, has limited range and not many young people will fork out the $$ for the aerials needed to receive it which means they will have a lack of veiwers.

with TVNZ's bullshit ways i doubt they will ever get a decent music station running on its own channel.

115157 2003-01-19 09:21:00 I have watched M2 on several occasions and have several observations:

1: The music seems to be one genre, and mostly it sounds similar and is of a dubious quality - ie, they play everything they are offered

2: Apart from Joe Cotton, the announcers are C-R-A-P

3: We had MTV for a while, which was canned due to lack of interest for a 24/7 music channell (so I was told by a TV executive)

If M2 played not just rap or techno I would sign a petition, but quite frankly, I would rather see a 24/7 sports channell on TV - but I think there is fat chance of that too.

115158 2003-01-19 09:27:00 m2 24/7 would never fly.
MTV didn't make enough money, and NZ is struggling to cope with 4 free to air channels as it is.
I disagree with the comments about UHF aerials being a barrier, as anybody in a metro area will have a UHF aerial these days.

And of course like you say Sky has a music channel.

115161 2003-01-19 21:07:00 I'm sorry to say this, but...

To really judge it you'd have to watch the full six hours of M2, right from when it starts to 6:00am :D

And in case you only ever watched parts of it, Volume is general music, the Top 12 is what you vote for, Number 8 is NZ music, Stylus is dance and electronica, Alt is just that - alternative (apparently veering towards guitar-based 'serious' artists), Retro is old retro music (about the 80s), as far as I know Guess Who's Coming To DJ is where they have a guest who picks their favourite songs to play, Top 5 Songs To [insert activity here] is just that, and you can enter your favourite songs in there, Full Clip is hip-hop, Mulch is metal, Spectator is "breakfast TV for clubbers", a "very mellow, low-key show", and Informer is 30 mins covering one artist/band, with interviews, concert footage, and music videos.

Oh, and despite your beliefs, Joe Cotton is actually the worst presenter there.... a hideous beast.
