115754 2003-01-21 03:04:00 My Uncle has brought my Grandparents a printer for christmas which is refusing to work. The printer is an Epson Stylus C41UX with a USB 1.0 connection, unfourtunately the computer (which is a Pentium 200 with 64 megs of ram and Windows 98) did not have any USB ports so my Uncle had to buy a USB card as well from Dick Smith Electronics. This installed fine and so did the printer software but when the printer was plugged in, Windows searched for drivers for "a new device" and then decided that it was an unknown device and disabled it. When I tried to print a test page Windows then decided that the USB device wasn't working properly. I am wondering if it is the USB card, the age of the computer or the printer drivers not installing properly. Can someone please help? camel (3049)
115755 2003-01-21 03:15:00 Is it Windows 98 or Win98 Second Edition?

I have had problems with some USB cards not working in Win98 but go fine in Win98SE.
Also check the printer specs, it might require Win98SE for USB operation.

115756 2003-01-21 03:30:00 Was everthing installed in correct order? I just installed a Cannon S300 and it must be done in a certain way - ie printer plugged in BUT turned off during software set-up. Re-read the book and see if it applies in your case.

115757 2003-01-22 08:18:00 I'm pretty sure you need SERVICEPACK1 installed to get USB to work properly in W98. Start\Programmes\Accessories\System tools\System infomation- click on Software enviornment to expand it, and check out Software Updates. Rod ger (316)

Win 98 is famous for USB problems; there's even a video of Bill Gates show casing the USB options; then the system crashes into a blue screen.
