115600 2003-01-21 01:43:00 A mate has just dropped off a Packard Bell monitor, 15”, model 1020.

Its problem appears to be mainly focus. Brightness and colour seem reasonable for a 7yo monitor but the focus is awful.

It doesn’t have a degaussing coil so I just run my old “Weller” quick heat Soldering Iron past it a few times and whilst it has improved matters there is still a focus problem.

Question is, does this model monitor have a focus adjustment, and if so where?

Any suggestions certainly appreciated.

115601 2003-01-21 01:56:00 Most monitors have a focus adjustment, often internal. Its usually around the area (or on) the High Voltage (EHT) transformer (25 kW, be careful). Its often a well insulated potentiometer, but be very careful! godfather (25)
115602 2003-01-21 02:02:00 Have a look at Billy Ts FAQ #4. However for some reason it isnt in with the FAQs !

115603 2003-01-21 02:12:00 Normally in the back of the monitor there is a think red cable going from the "black" transformer to a EHT plug on the back of the picture tube.

Ans normally there are two adjustments, some monitors have three (two for focus), if there are two the top control is the "Focus" adjustment, and the bottom one is the screen, you could if you like leave that on alone.

the EHT might be around 26 Kilo Volts, do not lick your finger and poke it in there,
The Focus is about 5 Kilo Volts,
& the screen would be up to (nice round figures) 500 Volts

Because the focus is a higher volts than the screen, it's postion on the transformer is higher up than the screen adjustment control.

A green cross hatch raster is good to adjust the focus you can go to
www.oh-bugger.net.nz
on the top left you will see " Check out your computer monitor."

115604 2003-01-21 02:38:00 Thank you Godfather, Terry, and Billy T.

All done and brilliant result. Only had to turn the pot about 10 degrees
clockwise and I recon it's better than new.

Thanks again

Bob
