115652 2003-01-20 09:12:00 I have age of empires2 and the cd is getting pretty scratched, so now that i have a cd writer i thought id make a back up copy cause its inevitable that the original will fail soon.

I'd imagine AOE2 is protected in some way. How do i get around this
to make a back up?

115653 2003-01-20 09:16:00 I can't imagine that copy protection was put on AOE2 since the game is not that recent so you should be OK. Just give it a go, CDs are cheap enough. :-) Susan B (19)
115654 2003-01-20 09:21:00 Seeing as it's getting pretty scratched, I'd say it's old enough to not have decent copy protection. agent (30)

Age of Empires 2 uses "Safedisc" (www.cdmediaworld.com) protection... That link will show you how to defeat it.

Alternatively this thread (perfectcopy.cdfreaks.com) discusses your game specifically.

Your weapon of choice should always be CloneCD (www.elby.ch).

Hope it helps.

115657 2003-01-20 18:24:00 Do i need to buy coneCD for it to work? I tried to copy it with the protected cd feature in the trial version, but it didn't seem to work. Maybe i should give it another go, you can never have to many coasters????

thanks loshing for the links

115658 2003-01-20 19:46:00 Well, we learn something new everyday, dont we? I wouldn't have thought AOE was "new" enough to have copy protection. :8}

Good luck and keep us updated on your results please roofus, cos we have AOE2 and a number of similar games that ought to be backed up for safety and this info is very useful. Thanks. :-)

115659 2003-01-20 19:49:00 I didnt think that it had copy-protection, however, Ive made backups of it, and I simply use the "No-CD" patch to save the disc from getting scratched - even the backups ;)

Google search for that and you'll find tons of links :) Might be a good idea :)

Cheers

115660 2003-01-20 19:54:00 Hmm... what kind of writer do you have?? Is it supported by CloneCD? Anyway, to make sure you get a workable copy, you should try writing at a slower speed.

The default CloneCD profile "Protected PC Game" is not the best... you should download different profiles and use the "Game CD" profile. You can download it from here (www.cdfreaks.com). [url=http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?s=73f6c73e6fdd3e1de631af1828818894&threadid=58658]This thread is very good place to test your writer's "Correct EFM Encoding" ... when a backup fails, it will determine whether it is more likely your writer or the settings used.

Let us know how you get on... btw, I always test my backups on cd-rw first... then once I get the right settings, burn to a cd-r.
