115419 2003-01-20 03:05:00 I have the sound scheme in windows XP pro set to 'no sounds', and none of the events in the list have sounds associated. But I still get the sounds!!! ARRRRGGGH! :D

Is there any other way to turn them off - short of replacing all the files with 0 byte files?

Other windows settings have also miraculously changed themselves too, like IE explorer home page, history settings, and many others. Some start menu settings have also changed.

The sounds were not present yesterday, and I certainly didn't turn them on. The only thing I have done since then is install Sygate's Personal Firewall. Is this likely to be the cause?

Cheers,
Craig,

115420 2003-01-20 03:19:00 Sounds like some malicious website has been altering some of your browsing settings.
As for the Windows sounds being altered, try setting them back to windows default, then restart, and change back to no sounds. If this doesn't work, then give your computer a shake(just kidding)! : )

115421 2003-01-20 03:21:00 The title of this post should really have been Malicious Windows Settings! A whole raft of settings have changed. But I think I know why - I ran windows update last night and downloaded about 30Mb worth of stuff. Today was the first restart after the install finished.

All of the other settings I can change back, but I cannot stop the sounds from playing, even though I don't want them. Is there a reg setting I can make to permanently stop windows sounds?

Cheers,
Craig.

115422 2003-01-20 03:26:00 The homepage could have been changed by you accepting some file while you were at an internet. Thats why it always pays to read what you are downloading.

Don't know why your history settings are changing.

The firewall may still have its own sounds, along with things like MSN messenger, however sounds such as maximise and minimise, exit and startup. Those types of sounds can be disabled in control panel as you have done.

Do a virus check on your system, also run ad-aware
