115398 2003-01-20 01:03:00 I am looking at a new printer for general home use and am wondering which would be better, the HP948C or HP5550? I know that the latter supercedes the 948C, but the PC World tests would appear to suggest print quality on the 948 is better. I would ideally like a 960C, but price is an issue there.
The 5550 also seems thirsty on ink in comparison.
As an aside, can quality scores between tests in different issues be compared directly side by side?

115399 2003-01-20 07:07:00 Hi Grimey

I bought a 5550 about 3 months ago and do a lot of high resolution printing from digital SLR. If the 948C is the one I'm thinking of- don't do it! I first bought this model (slightly cheaper than 5550?) from Dick Smith, had trouble as the feeder wouldn't pick up the paper... took it back and the salesperson said 'No wonder... that model is a dog' (or something to that effect), so I traded up to the 5550. Sure it takes up a bit of space but it's built much more robustly.

Print quality is excellent (printing highest res from 6 megapixel images)

There is a setting in the printer preferences you can set to use less ink too... doesn't appear to degrade print quality and print cartridges last about the same as the Epson I had.

Machine is very quiet compared to the relatively high priced Epson I had that I dumped after 6 months.

A very good feature of 5550 is that you can cancel print from button on front of printer immediately, check the other model has this... saves lots of ink if you change your mind or pic isn't printing the way you wanted.

Not sure about comparative reviews, but I've had four HP printers including previous 'professional' model of the 5550 that I use at work that has a very heavy work load, all performed very well with only a few minor quirks.

this printer beats all the other more expensive ones that I've tried and it's under $400.00!, you just have to bite the bullet on the price of the ink cartridges

hope this helps

115400 2003-01-20 11:05:00 The last printer I used was the HP 930C. Very good and I was reasonably happy with it.

I got a second hand buyer for it and its gone.

Replaced with the HP5550. Heaps better in quality of print... Faster...

I'm still using the ORIGINAL ink that came with it and have been using it for about 4 months.

I admit that I don't print everything that arrived on my computer though. I am on my second pack of 500 A4 plain paper and have used about 15 pages of Kodak photo paper.

I'm happy.

YMMV

115401 2003-01-20 22:05:00 I must also say that the HP 930c is one of the best I've used, very efficient, reliable, ... everything! I'm very :D with it. The printing cost is quite low as it does not use a lot, but prints top quality.

I also brought a 948 about 3 month ago as it was on special, but its still in the cupboard, so I can't really say.

But in my opinion, you should really consider the HP 5550 as it really does look like a great printer ;-)
