2003-01-19 09:19:00 | A workmate needed help getting his PC running again after a virus decimated his PC. It was in such bad state that we decided to format and start again. We put in the CD that came with his PC that was built by OEM computers only to find that the CD keys that should have been on the back of things had all been ripped off. Now my workmate says this is how they came to him and he is not an expert and is the first time he actually got these disks out. We will be following this up further to see what OEM have to say but the moralof this story is to make sure that you check your disks and equipment as soon as you take delivery and dont be scared to question when you think something is astray.

2003-01-19 09:26:00 | the last 2 pc's i've had to repair all where missing the cd key labels. fortunatly windows was running (just) so i got the key from the registry. sometimes it pays to write the cd key on the actual windows disk.

2003-01-19 20:18:00 | All OEM versions of Windows are supplied with a sticker that must be attached to the computer case. This sticker has the key on it. To not attach it to the case contravenes the Microsoft OEM licence agreement. Try looking on the computer case itself?

2003-01-19 21:30:00 | Sorry Big John. I read it as if you were looking on the CD case, but see now that you were saying that all along! Sounds like a bit of a problem really, as MS will be unlikely to front up, but if the system is reasonably new then the assembler should come to the party, a bit strange that the stickers were ripped off (presumable thats how it was delivered)? I follow the previous advice of writing the key on all CDs, but thats no help here.

2003-01-19 22:53:00 | We are getting the guy to chase it up with OEM in the first instance as he was the one that purchased it from them and hopefully they will come to the party otherwise he may have to take it to MS themselves | Big John (551) | |

Dare I say it, but a newbie usually knows nothing about CD keys and license stickers It sounds like your friend brought his computer second hand, and the previous owner removed the stickers etc, so he could install the OS on a better computer, using copied OS disks. Why else would anyone be bothered ripping off the stickers? Buyer beware |
