2003-01-19 09:11:00 | Hello, I'm just thinking of getting another computer just for study and general internet surfing and was wondering if you could help with suggestions: Microstar MS-6378 M/B, AMD Duron 1.3Ghz, 256MB 133Mhz SDRAM, Quantum Maxtor 30GB 7200rpm HDD, onboard Video/Sound/LAN, panasonic 1.44mb 3.55" FDD, Mitsumi 54x CD-ROM, Auriga PS/2 Internet keyboard, Microsoft Wheelmouse Optical, SP6270 280W spkr, Stanard ATX case with 250W Power Supply, AOC 17" Monitor This computer will definitely be running Windows Xp Pro and networked to another PC also running WinXP. It will then be on a ADSL connection. QMB Computers in Auckland will probably be assembling it for me and I will buy everything but SD-Ram from them on the side of the actual "working box". Anyone got comments about their assembling, good/bad? If anyone can offer any alternative for parts, I would be more than happy to have a look at it, but I'm on a pretty tight budget. This system is estimated to be around $920 incl. GST "ish" Many thanks in advance for your help,

2003-01-19 09:22:00 | i would start with a better mobo. i just built a pc with a fic am37 (onboard vis/sound/lan DDR usb2) i prefer sony floppy drives. you don't need a 7200 rpm drive so save $$ and get a 5400. | tweak'e (174) | |

2003-01-19 19:20:00 | Also, why is it not worth getting the 7200rpm HDD, what advantages and disadvantages apart from the 5400rpm and the 7200rpm? | ~~~~~ s y ~~~~~ (2054) | |
2003-01-19 20:50:00 | >why is it not worth getting the 7200rpm HDD, what advantages and disadvantages apart from the 5400rpm and the 7200rpm? unless you are playing games or doing video/graphics work then a 5400 will be ok. its just a little bit slower, the seek speed is the biggest difference between them, but for general run of the mill stuff you won't notice the difference exspecially with an all in one motherboard. as much as i love nice fast hardware there is little point spending the $$$ on a highend drive for a bottom end pc. you are better off putting the $$$ saved towards a DDR mobo and DDR ram (or better cpu). sony drive are advaiable. if you can't find any let me know i may be able to help. they are just a lot quieter than the panasonics.

2003-01-19 21:39:00 | Unfortunately, I still can't find any Sony ones. Do you know of any in Auckalnd, perfer. North Shore, or close to CBD. Is DDR-ram really worth it, even if it means only studying and internet usage only. is it really worth another $85 incl. GST to upgrade to: Athlon XP 1700+ Asustek A7N266-VM (with onboard nVidia nForce220D graphics) 256 Mb PC2100 DDR Ram The only problem is, I WAS thinking of getting 256 more as I move on to make 512 since SD-ram is pretty cheap now.
