115702 2003-01-22 03:48:00 I wasn't going to post back on this thread, but its just so exciting! :-)

Loshing nice summary before. Crozier has contradicited himself in so many ways i'd be here for years pointing them all out. (I bet he's gonna ask me to point them out!!!) lol

Baldy: As susan and chilling have pointed out, not all of live in sterile enviroment where everything has its position, and nothing is ever out of place. It's just how people are.

I wonder what bumbuddie thinks about us going past his stop thread post? (just joking cyber) ;-)

115704 2003-01-22 04:13:00 if its illegal here...whats the shops down south doing with machines that copy like cd writers?..
and if its illegal here..why are computers being installed with cd writers?....

i still am confused between difference of piracy and copying...if i copy my own cds i purhcased...just coz of the risk of stratching...and wanting to keep copy incase....then thats alright aint it?,...if its like to copy and sell...i'm definately against that...

115705 2003-01-22 04:23:00 I would like to thank the various people for their links on some of the protection sites that they have dug up . I own all of the games I have tried to back up, and I would never trade or give away these backups - they are for me etc .

The scratches that have destroyed many a cd of mine have come from none other than my old cd player - every now and then I would put a cd in, and it would spin it up furiously, and I would have to use the strategically placed paper clip to retrieve it .

By this time it was usually destroyed - but it happened infrequently enough, and on a tight budget I couldn't afford a new cd player .

So, I put this question to the people who think I shouldn't be backing up my games/programs:

Am I supposed to buy the same cd over and over again as it gets destroyed, or am I allowed to make these backups to keep a working copy of software I have legally paid for and registered?

I would also like to say that, while I agree in some ways with crozier and the points about language and the law etc, I really think the info in this post is helpful, as I never had much luck finding it myself .

Craig .

hahahaha nothing out of place. What a joke roofus. Whats living in a sterile enviroment got to do with teaching your kids how to look after things. I can assure you that I don't live in a sterile enviroment. I just like to look after what I paid good money for. If more people looked after there things, there would have been no need for this thread to even start

115707 2003-01-22 05:32:00 Chill,

If your 4 year old is damaging you discs, why don't you put them somewhere out of reach .

Or would that be too much like using your intelligence?

Hmmm... that's debatable. If people all got along, then you could argue there would be no crime and so on.

Unfortunately, that is not the case and we live in the real world. There is no Utopia where we all just get along, and where CD's don't get scratched. These things happen, you know? It's called an accident.

115709 2003-01-22 06:46:00 Baldy,

My 4 year old is encouraged to use the computer and could do so without any assistance from anybody else if we didn't supervise him (which we do anyway). But, sometimes, he can drop a CD when putting it in, or taking it out - accidents happen.

Personally, I always create copies of any software CD's that require you to use them everytime you run the program. I do this with no guilt attached. When I buy a piece of software, I buy a licence to use that software. If the CD gets damaged, I still own the licence to use that software. Can I walk into any computer store and swap the faulty CD for a new one at no charge (or perhaps the cost of the media - $1.00)? No - not a chance. The software companies want everything to go their way. Therefore, my only course of action is to revert to the backup copy of the CD (or more usually the original, as I normally use the backup on a daily basis).

Despite all the flak flying in this thread, there is a lot to be gained from discussing the issue.

Just my 2c.......

Cheers

Yes I know accidents happen Miami, and I have nothing against making legit back-ups (I did after all mention that I have made copies of games for my kids can take them with them when they have sleep-overs etc)

I will make no further comment on this subject
