115501 2003-01-23 19:02:00 It really does sound like a HDD problem, in that it is stopping when it shouldn't, and failing to spin-up when starting.
This is very similar to one failure I recently had.
In the end the HDD would only start if I had it in the freezer first, which I had to do to extract the last of the data, before fitting a new disk.

115502 2003-01-23 19:17:00 Have a read of my first post again. If this ONLY happens when you try and boot, it's possibly and out of sync video signal.

If this happens while in windows, then its something else

While you could be correct roofus, I also take it that the HDD refuses to spin up?
However that *should* elicit an error message.

115504 2003-01-23 20:51:00 Correct godfather. When the videocard gets out of sync, the harddrive will power up and spin momentarily and then stop.
If it's not powering up at all then the videocard obviously isn't going to have anything to do with it

115505 2003-05-11 21:59:00 An update on my original problem.
Have discovered that downloading Compaq Advance Power Management’ and setting it on low to
‘Allow Windows Timeouts’, has resulted in no more crashes to date. Have re-installed MS Word with success.
It appears the problem was with the sleep mode, which the Power Manager turns off, but can be re-activated by
placing it on the high setting.
One final question if I may:
Why does the computer start crashing after 5 years with the sleep mode working fine and is it possible to get it
operating properly again?
It’s a big advantage to be able to simply put the comp to sleep and leave my browsers open at a specific web page,
rather than have to switch the computer off every time I go away for an hour or two and then have to start everything
from scratch.
Cheers
Graham.

115506 2003-05-12 03:31:00 Power management is funny. Ha Ha. :_|

Is the time and date OK when you boot up? If the battery on the motherboard is dead, the clock on the motherboard (which would be used in its power management) might be erratic.

Heard of the Opera browser (http://www.opera.com) georgea? You can leave all your pages open, close Opera and when you come back again it is all just how you left it. Sooooo handy. :-)

MMM many people as the same questions about many problems with their computer. the crashs could have occured by the installation of a new prog or not enough ram to suspend to.

Another option you could look at is Hibernation.
First goto the run command and type nohiber.
if it finds a file then hibernation isn't going to work. If windows says it cant find the file then read up about it,

Already have Opera, have it open along with Explorer and sometimes would just like to minimize them, disconnect from my ISP, then put it into sleep mode (which have always been able to do).
When I come back an hour or two later, simply press On button, connect to ISP, and the pages are right there.
Now I have to close everything, disconnect from ISP, then shut down (rather than leave computer on).
On return have to reboot, re-connect, open browsers before I get back to my favourite pages.
Maybe I should get onto Compaq - why does the sleep mode fail and can it be restored without the crashing!

(No joy with hibernation - also no idea what is meant by looking it up!!!)

115510 2003-05-12 20:57:00 Hibernation is where all the data that is stored in RAM gets put in a hiberfile.sys file located on your HDD.

When windows loads up, it checks each time to see if it should load the data from that file or not. If you've hibernated, it will basically do a more of a permanent standby and fully shut down your PC afterwards.

Turn your baby back on and you're right back where you left off!

Hope this helps, but its only available in Win2K/XP, and maybe ME AFAIK.
