What does System Restore use Chill........ I was informed it used bugger-all.

Yes dragonslayers comments are also correct, although by default this shouldn't be disabled. It's generally caused by crappy progs.

Don't disable system restore, while you have never used it, you never know when you'll need it. It's a bit like antivirus software and backups. They may not be used for ages, but when you need them they are there to save you.
Also system restore uses crap all RAM and crap all resources.
p.s. if you want to utilise all your RAM so that your computer runs faster refer to the vcache settings in the "RAM clutter" FAQ

115332 2003-01-19 23:35:00 Many thanks for all your *fast* responses! Much appreciated.

I don't use system restore as I'm well protected with Ghost and WinSafe, two superb apps I've used for some time and that have gotten me of the **** more times than I can remember /:~)

I'll check out the Ram clutter thing roofus.

How many progs his PC can hack! I run my AMD Athlon XP 1700+ a whole lot harder than I do my 300Mhz P2

Okay, Mind your language a bit please, this being a fmaily forum and all, there are people who may find it offensive...

Okay.. I had been informed that it slowed your PC down a fair whack, Not tons, but still... enough. I also would have thought that with it monitoring all the changes etc that goes on in your PC that it would be slower...
I was only offering a suggestion to speed it up.

I thought it was you that said that RAM had nothing to do with it and that it was "System Resources"?!

A computers CPU isn't going to have any effect on "Out of Memmory" Errors. My 400mhz computer could have 12 browser windows, adobe photoshop, kazza lite, and many other applications. Up to a point where my resources are then used up. At this point i could no longer open any more as i would get an "out of Memmory" message. I can have lots and lots open if Resources wasn't a problem as these open progs while using up all the RAM just pour over into virtual memmory. and hence you can have many many applications open. The CPU only comes into play if you have each of your programmes processing constantly.

No system restore doesn't slow down your much at all. If you were to guage it, it's probably going to be about 0.025%. Most of systems restore activity occurs when the computer is idle. Hence you could be away from your computer and notice that there is a lot of hard-drive activity going on.

Correct RAM has nothing to do with it. However i did note that the original poster is running 384MB of RAM. Win9x knows how to use up to 256MB effectively then after that it uses it but not very efficiently. In my RAM clutter FAQ i address the issue of vcache settings, so that you can get more out of your system as far as RAM is concerned (not resources).

(for those of you who have no Idea what I'm talking about please click here (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz))

Righto:

Language:
I have been told that there is a Language filter on PF1 - and no matter how idiotic I seem to people I am not stupid enough to try it. If the word C*** isn't listed in the "Bad Words list" then how about emailing Bruce and asking him to add it. Bugger (a.k.a: Toyota - remember those ads!?)isn't [considered by me] as a Swear word due to the fact that I just don't think of it as one. Bugger seems like a formalized swear word you say when something isn't going your way.

As for the rest of this topic I'm not really going to say much considering I've managed to get OS's and games working on computers that are considerably below their minimum spec's without too much hassle.

115339 2003-01-20 02:00:00 Chill:

Even in the most religious of families, the word crappy would be acceptable .

I don't think there are too many families who would be offended by people using that terminology .
