Sounds a bit optimistic in your predictions. But anyway on your tight budget would you be using this software? no, not likely. Therefore its irelevant.

Tweake is a fan of the sony floppy drives, but if you barely use your floppy drive its probably not worth the extra cost just for a little less noise and the small but slightly higher possibility of failure. (Especially on a tight budget)

Go the AMD 1700+
If all your doing is studying and internet browsing, then i reckon you can get away with SD-ram instead of DDR. Sure it is slower but in your case you won't notice the difference too much

they are the same price (well close enough to it assuming youre not penny pinching).

yeah whatch the dollars. it's just the first mobo you posted is an oldy. wheres you can get a new one for the same price(with better features). infact the nforce board sounds like a bargain.

as far as ram goes i prefer the ddr not only for the speed but after you upgrade to a decent cpu (eg xp 1700 or better) you will be kicking yourself for not having ddr.

however it all depends on your budget :)

115235 2003-01-20 03:41:00 Reckon the 7200 drive is worth it if you can afford, but DDR ram and a better processor not needed for internet/work. The faster hard disc will speed up boot and application load times significantly, and be a great aid if you play music from your pc as you work.

I run an athlon 1200 with SDram, and I use it for new games, work and internet. It does things just fine. (sure the graphics can't be set to the highest settings, but I am there for the gameplay, not the art.)

Best bet is to figure out exactly what you want to use the PC for, and work from there.

Here is a guide:

Work/Internet
A duron 1200 or better
sdram (256MB for running winXP)
motherboard (onboard sound, maybe graphics)
-- If you get on board graphics, get a motherboard with an AGP slot as
-- well, so you can upgrade later
20Gb hdd 7200 RPM (seagate are very good)
generic FDD - unless you use floppy disks alot.

Games etc
athlonXP 2200 or better
DDR RAM (at least 384MB, if not 512Mb)
Geforce4 64MB
Asus / Gigabyte Motherboard
separate sound card
80Gb Hdd 7200RPM
etc......

Basically, just stick to your budget, as youll probably find, no matter how much you spen on your PC, you will be getting a new one in 2/3 years anyway. Why spend more than you need.

115236 2003-01-20 04:15:00 Thank you very much to all, I will be taking all into consideration, I think I might go the Athlon way, adding another $85 as it looks like the nforce (asustek) mobo is pretty good. But the downside is, I believe you have to use DDR Ram then... :(

But thanks,

115237 2003-01-20 04:25:00 Just adding a bit here,

Is it worth it ... (again) to get a Samsung Hard drive 40GB ATA-100 5400RPM SV4012H instead for 15 extra, making the whole lot $100 extra, I guess I could wait if its worth it! :D :)

1. Is Samsung any different to Maxtor, if one better than the other?
2. Is it worth getting 10GB more but slower speed?

many thanks once again,

115238 2003-01-20 04:52:00 If you think you need the 10Gb, The key here being:

do you want to store music, games and large apps?
do you think you might want to in less than a years time

- or -

do you want all your apps to load faster, and work while virus scanners are active (ie full scanning) and stuff like that.

Option 1: get the larger disk

Option 2: get the faster disk

Personally, I would go for option 2, even though I need vast storage. 10Gb isnt that much of a difference.

115239 2003-01-20 04:54:00 There isn't very much difference between Maxtor and Samsung is there? Just making sure that maxtor is ok incase. ~~~~~ s y ~~~~~ (2054)
115240 2003-01-20 05:10:00 Yup, maxtor is fine. There really isn't that much of a difference between different manufacturers these days. However, I find that seagate baracuda (7200rpm) drives are significantly quiter than most others for their price.

It really is just personal preference.

115241 2003-01-20 05:56:00 I'm more of a "multitasker", think I'll go the faster way, But I'm just wondering...

Running XP Pro now with 384Mb SD RAM, i'm feeling its not enough. My PC often freezes for few second, but then eases up. Just wondering if I'll need more in that case, because if I go the DDR Ram way, then I'll centainly be having trouble getting another 256 since their so expensive.

many thanks,
