always look at reviews and don't EVER look at ""Specials"" that stores have
sure you may save some money but always look at www.pricespy.co.nz once you have found the product
i read in a good magazine once that "when you are searching thew reviews have a Spread Sheet open and copy paste a list of all the products, Prices, pros and cons"

i find this so useful

don't listen to people who post threads on there own hardware because not all of them have used a variety of products and have any bases for comparison (i don't mean any offence)

115206 2003-01-19 17:53:00 I have an AOPEN 48x12x50x that came with a new PC at Xmas (from me to me !)
It's ok but has a worrying hum and vibration when reading at maximum speed

Maybe I should have it replaced...any opinions?brig

This sounds like a manufacturer getting ride of discontinued stock, maybe 18 months old. I'm sure they're fine, but why buy a model with one-third the write speed when you can get a 48x for $20 more?

I see these retailers advertise specials like this from time to time. It seems they hope the general public won't realize they're dumping old merchandise at prices that appear cheap but are no bargin compared to current stock.

115209 2003-01-19 20:27:00 I would DEFINATELY get a Lite-On writer, as these are about the only writers capable of backing up Protected Disks. Check out the CloneCD website for comparison.

sounds like it isn't mounted properly. that drive will only read at 40x unless you hold the button on the front of the drive and put it into full speed mode (50x read). the reason for the 40x speed is to make it quiet. mine is very quiet so i'm surprised yours is vibrating. also check your disks (any stickers on them?) and how sturdy is the pc (it could be whole pc vibrating).

115212 2003-01-20 04:49:00 I had an Aopen for about 9 months then it just stopped writing, could read ok but refused to write.
Have now changed to a Liteon 48x24x48 and it dropped straight in, no problems at all. Worked with the existing Nero software and with the upgrade to 5.5
But then again, the Aopen woked fine until it spat the dummy.

Eh?

Excuse me scOut, but I would have thought that people who post threads (pro and con) on their own equipment - which they may have used for many months, are probably in a better position than the reviewer, who has only used the same product for a matter of a few weeks in the process of doing a review

I have a LG CDWriter myself, which I cannot fault. but seeing as I have read excellent reviews on the BTC in PC magazines, thought I would recommend that brand. Seeing as it was less than $100

115214 2003-01-20 05:55:00 Although I have installed a lot of CD-RW Drives, Sony seemed to be one of the reliable ones, but I am very impressed with the LG brand and have yet to see one fail. Out of the LG brand, my 24x10x48 CDRW Drive with 8MB of Buffer Underrun proof cache is definitely an amazing writer.
The 48x ones seem to be very good, but you do get what you pay for. I have seen BenQ/Acer & BTC ones fail around 1 years use, mainly in mass marketed Clone PC's (unfortunately some have been PC Co. & Compaq last year.)
