115514 2003-01-20 23:06:00 Anyone know why a CD with headphone jack will play audio on one computer to headphones, but on another, after trying a few CD drives with the jack, will not play when connected to another computer. The drives/headphone work ok on a TL Systems PC but won't work with a PC Company one. Any/all help and advice appreciated! JonnyP (3046)
115515 2003-01-20 23:19:00 Did you try adjusting the volume control next to the headphone jacks?
(Obvious I know but have to ask :))

I don't know if this is true as I haven't tested it myself but I think it depends on how the CD-ROM is reading the audio CD.
You have an option of reading audio CD's digitally in Device Manager, and I think if this is enabled then the headphone jack won't work as the CD is not being read like a normal audio CD player would read it in analogue mode.

Does that make sense?

115516 2003-01-21 00:20:00 That's an interesting problem. Try removing the IDE cable from the CDROM when it's in the PC Company machine so that it is just working as a stand alone player ( or power it from a spare power supply). If it works then it must be a Windows software problem, as CyaBro suggests. Terry Porritt (14)
115517 2003-01-21 00:23:00 Or... a problem with the IDE cable preventing the player from working... Terry Porritt (14)
115518 2003-01-21 00:29:00 Just confirmed my suspicion by a quick test myself.

Headphone jack on CD-ROM drive won't work if Audio CD playback is set to digital!

This can be disabled in Device Manager, by selecting Properties on the CD-ROM drive.
May also need to be done in Windows Media Player if that's what you are using. Go to Tools - Options - Devices - Properties (of the CD-ROM you are using - Change Playback option to Analogue.

115519 2003-01-21 01:19:00 Great, thank you. That did the job. Windows Media Player needed changing, as did CD Rom properties in Device Manager. After a restart the headphones worked! However, at that point I had another CD temp
connected, and after shutting down, connecting up the orig CD and restarting those settings had reverted to Digital necessitating another restart after changing them back. Now works fine, thanks again.

115520 2003-01-21 01:54:00 Just as a matter of interest, though neither of you say, presumably you are using Win XP?
There is no digital option in Win 98SE as far as I can see.

115521 2003-01-21 01:58:00 Yes, Terry - well I am anyway, using XP. Thanks JonnyP (3046)
115522 2003-01-21 02:05:00 Thanks for the info. Terry Porritt (14)
115523 2003-01-21 02:47:00 Yea. sorry Terry! Option is also available in Windows 2000. CYaBro (73)
