download a CD ripped from http://www.downloads.com/ then rip the music you want onto the hard drive; then finally burn it onto a CD.

requirements: CD Writer, CD ripping program.

115993 2003-01-22 09:34:00 There are several ways to convert music from Minidisc to CD.

1. Record through a high end sound card. Unfortunately, even doing it through an optical cable (assuming you have optical out on your minidisc player) will result in an analogue copy. Not the greatest way of doing things.

2. Play the minidisc optically to an audio standalone recorder such as the Philips CDR765 or even better, an HBB CDR830. The Philips will require "For Consumer Use Only" marked Audio CD-Rs. The HBB will record using standard data CD-Rs.

3. Get a NetMD player. I believe data can be sent both ways. Not 100% sure, so don't quote me on that.

All methods are probably more costly than you are willing to spend. My suggestion would be to either re-rip from cd's directly to computer (assuming you actually have the original music on cd).

Hope it helps.

115994 2003-01-23 02:13:00 For the record i have a NetMD

It is not possible to make a digital copy from minidisc to CDRW
On my netMD i have an optical in, but no optical out, and i believe this is the same for all Minidiscs.
With the NetMD you can transfer files too and from your OWN hard drive, but not to other peoples.

So your best chance is to copy to cd in real time, but your going to get quite a bit lost in the quality area

Hmmm... what's the NetMD like at transfer of mp3s? Is there like some copyright etc you must be aware of??

I guess the only way is to get a standalone MD player with opt out....?

Well the NetMD software takes an MP3 decodes it and re-encodes it as the ATRAC3 format that minidisc uses. It then transfers it to the player.
THe software keeps a register of the files you transfer to and from the player (you can do this up to 3 times, then you need to re-encode) If the register isn't there then you can't transfer the songs off the player and back onto the PC (though there isn't a lot of point sending them back to the PC apart from saving on time re-encoding them again)

I don't believe any minidisc player as an optical out. They mostly have optical in though.

I meant a standalone unit like the Denon DMD1000 (www.audioreview.com). The specs say it has optical out.

If u can transfer files to and from your own HD. i see no reasons why u cannot do it to other HDDs. do it to the HDD - burn to CDR/CDRW.

115999 2003-01-23 09:12:00 Oh k the Sony NetMD.

It has "piracy protection" going a little too far on this. I mean A WHOLE LOT TOO FAR. My step-dad is a musician he plays music (duh!). So he bought one of these expecting to be able to go to a gig, record it all then come home transfer it by USB and burn onto CD.

This is NOT the case. There is/was a petition going for an update to the NetMD to be a little more lenient on what you can/can't do.

It's pathetic that one can't record a live gig (that they play at) or record your Great Grandmothers stories and archive them on CD.

You HAVE to do it via another method, which means you'll have to record to tracks separately.

hmmmmm that reminds me, I still haven't put that thing on CD..... gee I wonder why.

Of course you can't see a reason why, because you don't have the netMD.
The software keeps an encryprted record of what you have sent to and from the minidisc. If the records aren't there then the player won't let you transfer the music. The only software you can use to transfer the files is sony's proprietary OpenMG (the name is something like that).

Music on Minidiscs are recorded in Sony's ATRAC format, so even if you could get them across to your hard drive, you still couldn't send them to a CD as there is no software (that i know of) that decodes ATRAC to send to a CD-r.
