115786 2003-01-21 22:36:00 Hi guys, got a friend who just got a new digital camera to use on a holiday they took, after visiting her yesterday she is most upset as she has accidently deleted her first lot of photos she took on her 32mb memory card. I pinpointed where she went wrong and got that sussed - bascially she didn't understand that the camera would show up as E drive when connected and thought she had saved the photos to a folder on her system, when in fact she was looking at them in her viewer and in the default viewer folder which was named the same as a folder to save them on c drive (it was a rather unusual setup and i could see how she went wrong).
Anyway the crux of the situation is that she has only used the 32mb memory card this one time that she lost the pictures after she deleted them thinking they were saved. So I told her that my opinion was that she had a better chance of recovery than ever before,(taking this into account {the one use only}), and not to use the card again till i talked to you pros here for some advice ;-). Am I right and will a shop be able to recover the lost images under this kind of situation, or is there even a program that could help us? Any imfo would be greatly appreciated - as she has lost/deleted a weeks worth of photos from their trip that are priceless to her:-(
The camera specs are:
Panasonic 2.0 mega pixel
DMC - LC20 - S
LC20
Lumix
with the extra 32mb memory card which is
Panasonic 32mb mem card
Model No: RPSDO32b

If this is a shop specialist job she is in the Wellington/Paraparamu area.

Certainly there are programs on the web which may be able to recover the files from the memory card... have a look at the details for these: {there were many others found also with a Google or two}. It may still mean a 'specialist' job I'm not sure.
Anyway have a look at the details for: Digital Image Recovery (home.arcor.de) or O&O Unerase (www.oosoft.de)

115788 2003-01-22 06:53:00 Since the PC sees the camera as another HDD, wouldn't any file recovery program pull them back?

I read somewhere recently that you can use your camera as a portable drive to move larger files between computers, so if that's the case I can't see why Nortons or any other unerase facility wouldn't work.

Just thinking out loud now, I wonder if it could be set up to that files deleted from the camera "E" drive go to the recycle bin, or perhaps they are there already?

I'll be trying this out with my new digital camera!

Cheers

115789 2003-01-22 07:54:00 Babe and Billy thanks for the feedback thats great!!!:-) :-) :-)

Babe - those links look like just what i will be needing, she uses win ME so i noticed one of the programs wasn't ME compatible, only Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP compatible, that was the one i liked the look of more actually. I will go and have a search now. You will have made her day :-) - Thanks heaps :-)

Billy - I wondered about that too - as the camera is seen as another drive, and was thinking along the same lines as you because my copy of Norton AV has the ability to recover deleted files. So I was thinking that maybe a normal data recovery program would work too???

I was hoping i might come across somebody that had had success in this kind of scenario for some feedback as to what they used. I was also hoping i might find a freeware program for her although i know that is unlikely :-( but I am sure she won't mind buying a program to recover her precious photos.

115790 2003-01-22 11:57:00 There is a good freeware data recovery program out there.

Take a look at This Site (home.arcor.de)

The program is not for the newbie and I would recommend a trial run on some deleted files on a floppy before trying it on the camera files.

Cheers

115791 2003-01-23 10:20:00 Thanks for the link Billy, that was the same one Babe had sent me too - the makers of Digital Image Recovery (I thought it would be best to go for a program designed for photo retrieval over general data retrieval). This program looks great and after 2 nights of searching i finally found a link to download the older freeware version of Digital Image Recovery - which has now been renamed and marketed under PhotoRecovery and is no longer freeware.
So thanks alot to you both for the helpful links Babe and Billy :-) :-):-)

I will post the results of how the photo retrieval goes in case they are of use to anybody else. Which may have to wait till i am back down her way next weekend if she doesn't feel confident using the program.

115792 2003-01-23 21:14:00 where did you find the freeware version? Sounds like it might be a good program to keep stashed away - just in case... Wrecker Jim (771)
115793 2003-01-23 21:27:00 Some feedback on the situation:

Digital Image Recovery is an excellent program to use and easy enough for a relative newbie to use too. She was able to recover all of the photos off the card that had been deleted - total of 260 photos approx.
A side note to this is that she had overritten about 6 photos, which didn't have the same recovery results as the ones that hadn't been overtaken, so it is definately best not to take any more photos if you realise you have lost them (thats obvious anyway i guess).

Anyway my rating of this program would have to be
:-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) and i wouldn't hesitate to buy the new pay version now i know its results.

My thoughts exactly ;-) - i am saving it to cd for future use too.
It is very elusive this older freeware version and i doubt it will be available at this last site for much longer.

Get it from here:
