If you are running a Windows platform how about the freeware version of CallCenter from CallCenter v3.9.3 (www.5star-shareware.com)

If you have Windows XP it has a built-in FAX program... although it may not have been installed by default.
(Look in the Help and Support Center {search for Using Fax} for instructions on installing and using Fax)

115761 2003-01-21 21:31:00 If your normal fax number is a "faxability" number (where your phone rings differently for an incoming fax) then unless you have a hardware based (usually external) modem, you may have difficulty getting it to recognise the ring cadence. godfather (25)
115762 2003-01-21 21:46:00 Im sure that 98 comes with stuff if you select it during setup (Or add it later under Add/Remove Programs and then Windows Components). Im pretty sure that Win2K detects if you've got a modem, and if you have then it install some stuff too...

Im assuming that its pretty basic though!
