1327531 2013-02-11 20:07:00 Could someone tell me what is a "Cloud Server"?
Recently I was downloading a large file and my usual D/L speed (1.5 MBPS) was down to 300 kbps. I cancelled the D/L and was about to give up when I decided to try another option. I had the choice of "global server",which I always used, and "cloud server" which I had never used. I was instantly downloading at 1.7 MBPS and the speed never altered.
Just out of curiosity I then tried the "global server" and it was still about 300 kbps.
So, what is a cloud server?

Purely buzzword-happy fanboy stupidity.

1327533 2013-02-11 21:54:00 Look here (openplus.wordpress.com) Jack.
Don't know why people post a stupid answer as above when someone has a genuine question. I think that they have nothing better else to do.
:)

1327534 2013-02-11 21:57:00 Without knowing the specifics of the site the file was being pulled from the answer is pretty legitimate. "Cloud" to me is no different to "Global" (as in could be anywhere).

It is just buzzword-happy nonsense. Obviously in this case, the cloud server had a better route from the OPs ISP.

1327535 2013-02-11 22:31:00 Yeah I agree, it is just a buzz-word. What were you using to download? If we can put it in context we may be able to help explain a little more :) It could well have been doing some distributed P2P stuff instead of a straight server -> client download. 1327537 2013-02-12 01:18:00 Ah flight-sim addons!

Yeah one is probably P2P / Torrent, the other "Global Server" would be direct server -> client (Which is ideal, and in this case a lot faster).

A lot of ISPs in NZ will throttle torrents / P2P, hence why your first "cloud server download" slowed down a lot.

1327539 2013-02-12 03:51:00 I believe it comes from network diagrams - rather than draw all the multiple interconnections on complicated networks it's generally just show as a cloud with the understanding that any point on the outside of the cloud can be connected to any other point also outside the cloud by whatever devious means is going on inside it.

This doesn't just apply to the internet in general but many other networks in the data and telecommunications industries and has been a standard method of representing the network since before the internet existed.

To me all internet servers are cloud servers but what they are probably meaning is that the cloud server is a distributed network (i.e. cloud) and the global server is probably a server in a single location with a dedicated amount of available bandwidth. A cloud server could also refer to something like torrent style distribution where everyone downloading is also uploading, that requires client software though.

Incidentally I skimmed through the link Trev posted and found it talking about something else entirely so maybe I have it all wrong.
