Linux & ddrescue may be a bit tricky for most home users to cope with.
I'd recommend something like Paragon Backup & recovery Free Edition.
Its a bootable CD that will do a file or folder backup/copy to another drive, JUST to get your data. All menu based so its very easy to use & can copy files that Win cant cope with. It wont do miracles though .

When trying to copy files, Win often has a complete brainfart (thats an IT term) if it trys to copy/read files that are a bit corrupt, unreadable or say filenames too long etc etc. Linux or the rescue type CD's work much better in these cases

Which is why I mentioned Active@ while not free it does actually work incredibly well where as I have seen major issues with Paragon in the past. It killed my Win7 computer

I use Paragon quite often, only to copy off docs & other misc files . It works very well for that, where Win wont load up, especially usufull when the HD is a bugger to try & get out.
Ive heeded the warnings from a few users & wont use it for imaging or cloning.

1327420 2013-04-02 04:54:00 Sorry for the thread necromancy but I thought I'd post an update. Finally had both the time and enthusiasm to try and get my stuff off that drive today.
I installed Ubuntu on my laptop for uni stuff 4-5 weeks ago, so I used the iso to make a bootable USB stick. Stuck it in my desktop and it worked like a charm :) No annoying folder ownership BS to worry about.

I've already got everything I really wanted off there, so thanks to everyone who helped!

1327421 2013-04-02 07:25:00 Wow!

I was not expecting a happy outcome, having concludeed myself that the data was toasted.

Mega kudos to all the bright sparks that contributed.

This is the sort of desperate data saving advice that needs to be stickied forever as a valuable reference piece.

I've recently experienced some instability, which seems to be MOBO related, so might be facing some hardware decisions soon myself.
There's always something sad about seeing a good rig descend to the point of being ditched.

Murphy's law... has to happen around tax time when there's other pressures.

1327422 2013-04-02 19:00:00 Great outcome, however my advice

backup, backup, backup in that order.

I had yesterday and today off work, most of yesterday was spent fixing a problem on my network which was preventing the backup of one computer here all fixed now though
