1327662 2013-02-12 21:48:00 Putting together a system for flight sim.
Will be using Intel E8600 CPU.
Mobo will be either Asus P5Q-Pro or P5K-E/Wifi
Want to run 8GB memory.
Opinions on using 4x2GB or 2x4GB
Also opinions on which would mobo would be best suited for this use.

1327663 2013-02-12 22:00:00 If its the P5K-E 2x4 wont work. Since it only supports 8 GB and its got 4 slots. You would have to use 2x2 in each slot Speedy Gonzales (78)

Just depends on whether you plan to upgrade just the RAM at a later time
or replace the lot (which is more likely given the older nature of the CPU/RAM combo you mention).

1327665 2013-02-13 01:31:00 Guess I'll go for the 4x 2GB then can use either mobo.
Trick is finding matching memory.
Have been looking for 2 sets of dual channel cl5.
Was wondering if there would be a noticable difference using these cl6 ones.

1327666 2013-02-13 04:58:00 At that price it is actually cheaper to buy a new 775 motherboard and some ddr3 ram. icow (15313)
1327667 2013-02-13 05:02:00 If you have the choice, it's always best to use fewer sticks as increased RAM slot usage increases the change of instability SolMiester (139)

Which one did you have in mind?

You could try this motherboard (www.impc.co.nz) with this ram (www.impc.co.nz) for a touch over $150 + a wee bit of shipping.

1327670 2013-02-13 21:05:00 Thanks for that, but I think if I go to DDR3 it will be with a i5 or i7. Driftwood (5551)
1327671 2013-02-14 05:00:00 Same motherboard as linked above (also here: www.trademe.co.nz), I was hoping the $100 Asus one was still stocked but it looks like it isn't and then $50 of ram e.g. www.trademe.co.nz

There is also an ex-display version of the Asus motherboard available here: www.nzgameshop.com
