2003-01-24 10:01:00 | Your defrag restaring is most likely caused by something accessing the hard drive this is something that you do just before you go to bed and make sure you disable your screen saver (right click on desktop > properies>screensaver. For faxes go to control panel > printers and faxes and make sure you have the fax driver loaded. If not go top Control panel > Add remove programs select the add remove windows components check the faxes box press ok and follow the on screen instructions. Windows updates click on the icon in the system tray click settings and uncheck "Keep my system updated" this will kill the reminders but not fix the updates problem can't help with that perhaps you should try again and note everthing that happens then re post your querry. XP office best bet would be to check microsofts website.

Check out the FAQ there is bound to be plenty of info there on defragging as it has been covered heaps of times in the past. Dunno about the Fax. Right click My Computer to check the Automatic Update settings. It can be disabled there or use Administrative tools/Services to disable or enable it. |

2003-01-24 12:44:00 | Fax: Set up your fax as detailed earlier. Ensure you have the correct format in the header, that is, your telephone number, so that Telecom's machine can read it and send a return fax to you. Open the fax program, go to Tools / Configure Fax, click Next. Enter details in the boxes, click next till you get to TSID - and enter your number in as follows: The format is: 64 X XXXXXXX where: 64 = NZ X = your area code (eg 3, 4, 6, 7, 9... note, not 03, 04 etc) XXXXXXX = your number Now you need to send a test page to Telecom. You may like to choose a generic header page from within XP's fax set up, or use a word document, click print, and select Fax as your "printer". Fax this to 0800 108 208, then ensure you have the fax program running and set to receive faxes, you will receive a reply within a matter of minutes, with your test page and a printout showing recommendations regarding line signal clarity etc. J. :D

2003-01-24 23:00:00 | Called Station IDentity Change the CSID to your phone number, thats what others will see when the faxes identify themselves to each other, see if that works. Transmit Station IDentity = TSID

2003-01-24 23:07:00 | TSID and CSID are your "ID number", which is basically your phone number. When you are going through the set up procedure, you will see details at the top of the box... I quote Transmitter Subscriber Idendification (TSID) Enter the Transmitter Subscriber Idendification (TSID) to be used to identify your computer to a fax recipient. That one shows the fax you are dialling what your number is, and is the one that Telecom uses to return their test page. Called Subscriber Idendification (CSID) Enter the Called Subscriber Idendification (CSID) to be used to identify your computer to a fax sender. That one shows the fax that is dialling you what your number is, and may be used, by the sender, to confirm they actually sent the fax to you. You enter your number (64 x xxxxxx) in both the tsid and csid boxes. After entering these and clicking next, set options as to whether you want it to print faxes automattically when received, and where to store received faxes. Here's a tip. In the "Select Device for Sending or Receiving Faxes" box, if you have it set to automatiically answer after xx rings, you may find it interferes with normal voice calls or answerphones if you don't get there fast enough or are out. If you have it set to Manual Answer, your PC will ring whenever the phone rings, and the fax monitor as a process is running all the time, which could use resources. You can, however, pick up the phone, if it's a fax, then click the "balloon" near the clock that shows up when the phone rings, and hang up the normal phone and you will receive the fax. Personally, I DE-select enable answer, and go back into the set up wizard when I know someone is going to send a fax. I always have "Enable Send" ticked though. J. :D

2003-01-24 23:11:00 | I spelt identification wrong there - 4 times! well, actually, just once, copy and paste did the rest lol. OT: What's up with the Press F1 log in anyway - It says I am not authorised to log in, but it does it anyway, then when you preview the post and then click send, you lose all you typed! arggghh
