2003-01-23 11:11:00 | Symantec posted their scheduled weekly Live-Update early yesterday (169.3 kb's) but for some reason I couldn't download it until a short while ago? This should bring your virus definition library to a total of 62,951. If you d/l manually, got get them and keep up to date with the baddies! Cheers,Kiwitas,;-)

2003-01-23 19:20:00 | Thanks Kiwitas. :-) I see that my definitions were last updated on 22/11 and even though my settings are for it to inform me of updates it never does any more. Out of curiosity, how do you know when all these updates come out? Do you check the AV sites everyday or have email notifications or something?

2003-01-24 00:23:00 | Hi again NAV users, > > Out of curiosity, how do you know when all these > updates come out? Do you check the AV sites everyday > or have email notifications or something? Symantec updates their virus defs nearly every day and if you wanted to,you can get them using "Intelligent Update",but as these are not fully tested,I get them on their weekly scheduled "Live Update"!(Wednesdays unless there are real important ones) This I download manually,as my Norton AV is only a back-up app! NAV is resource hungry so I am currently the free Avast32 AV that I have been testing for past 6 months For AVG updates,I have a little app that tells me when Grisoft makes any changes to their Web pages! Cheers,Kiwitas,;-)

2003-01-24 00:34:00 | Hi Susan My NAV auto-update notifications stopped telling me about new releases some time ago but started automatically updating instead. I just checked and my last update was 22 January but logging on to NAV's update service tells me all my defs are up to date. It's all a bit weird. Below is a short sample (in date-added order) of the latest additions from my What's New.txt file. Could you check your version and see if its the same? Go to C:\program files\common files\symantec shared\virusdefs\20030122.005, open it and look for the txt file. Note that the file name is actually the date.005 Cheers Sis :x Billy 8-{) :D New virus definitions (sorted by Date added): Virus Name Infection Type Date added ---------- -------------- ---------- Backdoor.Qforager File infector 01/22/03 HLLP.5233 File infector 01/22/03 HLLP.7572 File infector 01/22/03 W32.Eroc.Irc File infector 01/22/03 W32.HLLP.Runnelot File infector 01/22/03 W32.HLLP.Seido File infector 01/22/03 W32.HLLW.Backzat.F File infector 01/22/03 W32.HLLW.Grexon File infector 01/22/03 Backdoor.Talex File infector 01/21/03 Backdoor.Zdemon.10 File infector 01/21/03 Backdoor.Zix File infector 01/21/03 Trojan.Poldo.B File infector 01/21/03 VBS.Tuna File infector 01/21/03 W32.HLLW.Eissa File infector 01/21/03 W32.Sistdi File infector 01/21/03 X97M.Bandi File infector 01/21/03 X97M.Loz File infector 01/21/03 X97M.Mauela File infector 01/21/03 Backdoor.Blizzard File infector 01/20/03 Bin.Auto.CER File infector 01/20/03 Bin.Auto.CES File infector 01/20/03

I didn't even know those files existed in those folders! :O Quite a handy thing to know, too -- ta! I bet you know about them from your zTree program.... :p Cheers Big Bruvver :x Trust that all is going well... |

2003-01-25 00:18:00 | Hi Susan Thanks for the confirmation, I always wondered if my defs were truly up to date. Yes, I did originally trace them with Ztree but once found, Windows Explorer does just fine. The best thing about Ztree is its speed and range of search/sort functions. Windows' Find function will pick up specific files easily too, but you can't drill down into the file looking for text clues you might want. Virtually all files have some plain text in them which Ztree will find with great speed, but it can also find words written in Hex which is great when you want to change what it says on screen or in my case, when a particularly annoying spelling mistake gets on my nerves. I'm a closet pedant you see.:D Thanks to you too exLL, it's nice to get extra confirmation, I'm a belt n' braces type when it comes to AV matters. BTW, could you send me your email address again, I can't find where I put it :8} Cheers Billy 8-{) :D Things are going very well thanks Susan, well ahead of expectations.
