116121 2003-01-23 07:31:00 hello good people

i use outlook express to download my xtra email and it rocks because i dont have to go the xtra website to check mail..lately ive started to get a bit of spam.. havent got a clue why im gettin them but i am..now alot of these emails have the same domain name but a slightly different bit before the @, sorry for sounding very un technical! okay what im saying is that many of these emails have the domain name greatfamilyoffers.com
but a slightly different front bit (ok sorry i got really untechnical again) eg
one mail might be

72181@greatfamilyoffers.com

another might be 272829@greatfamilyoffers.com

how do you create a rule that detects just the domain name? so when outlook checks the mail on the server it finds the emails with the same domain name and deletes them off the server..from what i read in the help you can only block specific email addresses..

someone help meeeeeeeeeee

cheers

116122 2003-01-23 07:39:00 You're in luck, we have our very own PF1 FAQ section which contains a Spam FAQ where you should find just the info you are after. :-)

FAQ link is top right of this page.

Somehow I'm on gambling lists. I have found making a rule that deletes the following in the "from" line from the server is quite effective:

gambling
gamble
casino
betting

In your case add a rule:
Where the From contains: greatfamilyoffers
Delete from Server

116124 2003-01-23 08:10:00 There is two ways of tacking the problem of spam mail.

Option one is download and install Mailwasher from

www.mailwasher.net/

It is also free and never runs out, created by a kiwi.

Once installed remove the option in OE > Tools > check for mail every 30 minutes or what ever you have it set to.

Then run Mailwasher and Outlook in conjunction with each other. Use Mailwasher to preview the list of messages at the xtra server and from there you can build up a friends and blocked list of names.

Messages like you mention can be not only blocked but you can also block that domain so they can change the offer a hundred times a day and still not get to you.

Once you have decided what messages are to be downloaded, you have the option of bouncing the junk back to sender or simply deleting from the server.

There is some debate for the pro's and con's of bouncing, it worked wonders for my junk mail but with many spammers using forged addresses you might be simply be bouncing the message to no where.

If Mailwasher is not what you want then try the following.

If you are using Outlook Express you can set up rules, one of them is Delete from Server.
Highlight the offending message, Click on Message - Create Rule From Message - that will open a box with three windows, the first window is ticked by default Where The Sender Is - go to the second window and tick Delete from Server - now the fun begins, in the third window is the senders address. If the address is yahoo, xtra, mailcity, or any other common web based mail, then just Ok the rule. If the address ends in something such as grouplotto.com or adultmail.com, then you can create a additional rule to further block mail from that site even if they change the first part of the address from freecar to freemoney. Place your mouse over the address, single left click the address, that will bring up a extra window, in the ADD line type in the address from and including the @, so for example type in @grouplotto.com and that will block other messages from that site as well. If you were to apply this to addresses for sites ending in yahoo for example, then you would also block all good senders from yahoo as well.

Personally I find Mailwasher quicker to use as you don't have the hassle of downloading new junk to create rules from. Your choice though.

What ever you decide to do, have fun.
