116572 2003-01-25 23:50:00 The never ending problems, Need some help

Just recieved brand new bits and chucked the pc together with a friend,
after finding out my old cdrom didn't work,i went and got a cdw for $170.
Borrowed WIN98SE cd from friend but i coundn't install it because a file wouldn't copy over. The CD was Scatched a bit so i figured it wasn't my PCs fault. Burrowed XP from another friend and got an error basicly straight away.Took the pc to a professional who formatted it and put WIN ME on it (dunno how, probly transferred installation files on by another HDD).Win ME being ME packed up and i couldn't get in to windows so Formatted it and brought XP.Did a repartion, scandisk, formatt
and tryed XP STILL CAN"T COPY ALL THE FILES.sometimes after pressing enter to retry it did copy it,but this didn't always work.
So I swapped Cdroms with 1 iknow that works and it did the same.
swapped HDDwith an old 2gig and it did the same

AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH

1100MHz Duron
30Gig 7200rpm Maxtor
Aopen Cdwiter 42x12x52x
MSI K7T Turbo 2 MB
(all around 2-3 months old)

please help
all i can come up with is a Hardware conflict of some kind

116573 2003-01-26 00:02:00 Well, the first thing you are doing wrong is that you are using CD's that are not yours so though that inself will not be the cause of your problems.

WindowsME, before you bash this OS can be as good as any other OS but it likes the correct drivers.

Could be hardware, have you checked for hardware conflicts in the Device Manager.

116574 2003-01-26 00:07:00 well I'm not expert but from your post there are a few other things u can try...

since any cd-rom or writer gives u the same error, it can't be a optical prob.

hdd can't be it since u tried with a 2 gig hdd.

Leaves the following to investigate:

motherboard, try and check for ROM updates at their site.
data cables, very slim possiblity that its them but its worth a try
HDD, CD-ROM configuration on motherboard, i.e. are they on separate IDE channels or are they master/slave? try switching.

and I guess u could try removing all the non-essential devices like modem, sound card etc. and then try and install XP.

Did u test ur cd-rw in another comp?

Hope this helps

116575 2003-01-26 00:08:00 Can't check for conflicks cause theres nothing on my computer
just bios
or dos if i stick in my win98 boot disk.

Yes burrowing CDs was my first mistake so thats why i brought XP.

Just might sell the PC
as parts or whole if someone wants to try and fix it

116576 2003-01-26 00:09:00 If it is the initial file copy(s) when booting from CD that are failing, try setting the BIOS IDE parameters for the CD port to the lowest spec (i.e UDMA disabled / PIO 0). Some BIOS drivers for CD's seem to be a bit flakey. Once the operating system loads, it uses it's own CD driver which is a lot more forgiving :| wuppo (41)
116577 2003-01-26 00:11:00 Firstly - try agian, reformat, install OS..
Secondly, check you MoBo's BIOS version, on your MoBo's website - your version may be faulty???

also, u say this:

.
Did a repartion, scandisk,formatt
> and tryed XP STILL CAN"T COPY ALL THE FILES.sometimes
> after pressing enter to retry it did copy it,but this
> didn't always work.

U say sometimes it works - and the file copies - so wots wrong with tht? is there anotehr file after that that doesn't copy as well?
Cheers

116578 2003-01-26 00:11:00 There will be a fix somewhere, just a matter of working away at it.

Hardware is not my strong point but there are others in this group that can better understand the possible problems with hardware and will be in a better position to crack it.

116579 2003-01-26 00:16:00 yeah the message that it can't copy a file comes up heaps like 15 times
and on some of them when u press enter to retry it works and goes on to the next file. Other files that won't copy u have to skip

116580 2003-01-26 01:25:00 You are not overclocking? Have you set the RAM speed correctly? Try one step down, anyway.

Memory errors seem to happen most when you are using/transferring big files. I think we could call Windows big files. :D

I would suspect your (new?) memory. Try it at a lower speed, but if you can take out half of it (by turns), or borrow some known good stuff, you might find out. ;-)
