2003-01-25 18:23:00 | Thought I'd do a quick poll on what we all found necessary these days to preserve our security and privacy and protect ourselves against spam and other nuisances. I run: Norton Antivirus Zone Alarm MailWasher AdAware Simply Super Software Trojan Remover Webroot Privacy Master Panicware Popup Stopper And I suppose I could count part of the function of Cache Sentry as removing wasteful traces of where I've (supposedly) been on the web - I've had URLs listed in my index.dat filesthat are not only highly dubious but ...er...don't even agree with my sexual orientation :-) I can only conclude they were popunders or something like that. So how much armour does everyone else have, and is it threatening to outnumber the useful programs? :-) Re index.dat in Win XP Pro, BTW, I will make another post. Argus

2003-01-25 20:16:00 | Paranoid ?:| I run McAfee AV, manually updated weekly. No firewall usually active, I use a NAT configured router to connect to the web, so that takes care of incoming. Activate McAfee firewall if in doubt on any newly installed software, normally its off. I run AdAware occasionally. No spam, no need for Mailwasher. And I really don't care if someone can tell where I have been. I am not that peturbed about Adware either, as long as any benefit is outweighed by any software use it allows and it doesn't degrade the efficiency of my PC. There is no such thing as a free lunch.

2003-01-25 20:17:00 | Well being one of the people in this forum who runs GNU/Linux, I don't find it necessary to run so many applications. I run: IPtables (Firewall - with my own script, its quite paranoid when it comes to sorting packets and very secure ;-) ) Galeon (Browser - this blocks all popups, except the ones you click to open) As for preventing spam, I find that the best protection is to be careful where you write your e-mail address and how to write it. I get the occasional one from smilepop.com (Haven't received one for a while now) but sometimes just for fun, I use the bounce feature built into KMail. And I don't run any antivirus software :D

2003-01-25 22:22:00 | A virus scanner. Ad-aware and thats it. I'm on dial-up and I believe your a bit paranoid if you have a firewall on such a connection. Any type of hacker is not going to look to hack into a dial-up connection. (Niaeve i hear you say) oh well thats IMHO.

Thats my belief also. Different on ADSL where even on Jetstart you have the same IP for a considerable period. If using P2P on dial-up and connected for days, then one would need to be more concerned about what you are downloading than what is hacking in. |

2003-01-25 23:03:00 | I'm with GF and Roofus. I don't run a firewall either. I was under the impression that with computer forensics, no matter what you had deleted from your hard drive was recoverable, so have never bothered with those Cache/Harddrive washers either BALDY:-)

2003-01-25 23:36:00 | I suppose it makes you feel better but everyone needs to be aware that the more programs of this type you have running the more potential for problems and conflicts with web sites and email. Firewalls, popup stoppers etc are causing problems with websites and email all the time for people who are not familiar with them and have installed them because someone has told them it is a good idea. I agree with previous comments a firewall is not necessary with a dialup connection and If you have all the latest Windows updates and have an updated anti-virus programm this is all that is necessary provided you use the internet sensibly and don't leave you email address everywhere. If you use web browsers and email programs other than Internet Explorer and Outlook Express then the need for these security programs is greatly reduced. Most people are not concerned if their movements are tracked as they have nothing to hide and the time spent configuring, monitoring, adjusting and updating as well as investigating all the false alerts could be better spent on doing something else. I don't use Windows, and all I have is some message rules set up in Netscape Mail to filter the occasional spam message. I don't run Anti-virus, firewalls, or any other type of blocker or stopper and have never have any problems with viruses, spyware or accessing websites or email. I appreciate Windows users have to be more careful due to the inherent insecurity of the OS but don't complicate your internet experience by installing something that is not really necessary and may cause you more problems than it prevents.

2003-01-26 00:31:00 | Windows 2000: McAfee AntiVirus v6, with all the options enabled (URL/IP filtering, email scanning, internet scanning, download scanning). Windows XP: not connected to the net, but has XP firewall enabled. Dual-boots with WinME, which has McAfee AntiVirus v6 again, including McAfee Firewall (dunno why you can't install it on 2000 - and I have two licences for McAfee AntiVirus). Windows 98: Norton Anti-Virus 2000 and a firewall (can't remember name).

2003-01-26 00:45:00 | AVG Antivirus 6 Black ICE 3.5 My mail server runs SpamAssassin.org (which kills spam before I see it). And I use a router (PC) which is so unstable that it would crash the moment someone tried to get access to my private network :D
