2003-01-25 03:57:00 | I see where someone had a problem with Zone Alarm last Feb 2002, but not enough detail given. My problem is that Zone Alarm is locking out any Online virus checker now. On Friday it appears a virus has slipped into the works, as I have been sending 32 and 43 e-mails to my son and daughter, concerning the son's upcoming wedding. On Thursday last morning, AVG's auto update was completed, so I don't know how this worm got through. Had been into Hotmail Thursday afternoon, where there were 14 genealogy email requests, (do I say any more?). What would happen if Zone Alarm was un-installed, would the Internet still be blocked for online virus checking ?. Don't ask this old timer to go into theH-KEY setup !!. Thanks for any help, I need to get back on line for my Best Man's speech. Les 3.

2003-01-25 04:07:00 | Are you using AVG and a On Line Checker as well.? I would stick with just one or the other, probably AVG if you have it installed. For Zone Alarm, it might be blocking it because it knows no better. You don't mention which version but maybe you need to open Zone Alarm and give it server permission for that On Line Checker to be carried out. Double click the Zone Alarm icon and locate the list of programs for which there are blocks or permissions attached. Scroll down to the program in question and change the red X or blue ? to a green Tick so you would be have 4 greens in a row. Give that a try. Many programs don't need server access but some like music sharing do and maybe your On Line checker is the same. As for the virus, use AVG and do a thorough scan top to bottom. If you are using WindowsME and have System Restore enabled, post back and I or someone will tell you how to disable it so any virus in there can also be removed. Does this help or way of the beaten track............

2003-01-25 20:28:00 | Hi Gordon, thanks for your prompt reply. Win98SE operating software. AVG didn't pick up any viruses, so I went and did an Online virus check, Housecall. AVG does an complete auto check at 21.00 every evening, although it's screen was not up there this morning. Zone Alarm 2.6 free ver. has been an excellent firewall, until it locks you out of the net. The Overview screen shows pleny of blockages. Should the padlock at top of screen be Open or Closed ?. Thanks again Gordon for your help. Les3 Printed off their instructions and carried out those without success.

2003-01-25 21:55:00 | On my version of Zone Alarm which is a version 3 something the padlock is open. Try opening the padlock and see if that helps you. I have never used the padlock so I am not really sure how you lock or unlock it. | Gordon. (2217) | |
2003-01-25 23:25:00 | Hi Les, May I suggest that you try the Nortons online virus checker. security.symantec.com I would also do a complete system scan with your AVG. I think that you will find that the Housecall scanner is picking up a false virus if you have AVG installed. BALDY:-)

2003-01-26 06:20:00 | Baldy thanks for the link, have run the Symantec check over 20299 files etc. with no viruses found. The people received multiple copies of the same e-mail, now say they received only one copy, so hopefully they virus has gone. Strange thing is that the only attachments received have been from reliable friends. Perhaps it's come down from Korea's ISP shutdown !!. Thanks again fellas, Regards, Les3

2003-01-27 20:50:00 | Thanks to Gordon and Baldy. The virus seems to have been taken okay. Notice since updating latest free Zone Alarm, that previously the earlier ver. was not popping up to tell me it had blocked an intrusion. Now it takes all my time to type or do anything as Zone Alarm halts the screen. So some b.... must have been into my computer through the back door !!. Thanks again and it's good to have such good answers to our problems. Les3

2003-01-27 21:12:00 | You should be able to right click on the ZA icon in the system tray and "Shutdown ZoneAlarm". ZA shouldn't block anything coming from a site you are visiting. However it sounds like your problems are a little deeper than that, as ZA usually only picks up the unexpected. >Now it takes all my time to type or do anything as Zone Alarm halts the screen This is NOT normal behaviour for ZA, also i'd like to know exactly how ZA "blocks the screen" and what with. It sounds like either something has broken ZA, or something is messing with it big time. More information please! .Clueless

2003-01-27 21:16:00 | If you are getting the Zone Alarm Pop Up's advising of a new intrusion and this is stopping you from doing anything then open Zone Alarm and locate the Alerts and Logs window and in there will be a option to turn off those pop ups. In my version which is likely to be fairly similair to yours I suspect now that you have upgraded click on the Alerts and Log tab on the left hand side > then click Log Viewer tab which on mine is on the top right > then in the window called Alerts Event Shown change the tick to Off so now instead of always alerting you to anything and everything it will only alert you when a program tries to call out This could include a program for which you have already given permission to do so but may have been updated and therefore it has changed. Try that.
