116656 2003-01-26 05:38:00 I'm planning on creating a website.
I don't no much (hardly anything really) of HTML - well - not enough to do wot i'm planning.

I once made a site with Geocities a few years ago, but tht was a bit limietd, and i already have my own webspace.
Now all i need is a What You See Is What You Get web page designer.
Anyone no wots good, and not good?

Wot is MS frontpage like?
cheers

116657 2003-01-26 06:00:00 I would strongly recommend that you learn HTML, it is not that difficult. You are then able to take control of your own webpages, even if you still use a WYSIWYG editor. There are many very good HTML tutorials on the internet as well as books in the library to borrow.

1stPage 2000 is an excellent free HTML editor that includes a reference page to help you along.

116658 2003-01-26 06:00:00 im guessing the website your planning to make is gonna be a personal one of sorts, so nothing too flashy, well free comes to mind, so maybe AceHTML 5 (tucows.swko.net) might be a good look, cant comment on how good it is, but its been brought up in a few 'free wysiwyg' threads

theres also Composer, which comes with the mozilla (mozilla.org/) (channels.netscape.com), which is a great little program

but if you want to know the best, imho, it would have to be DreamweaverMX, but only for the high end stuff, a bit excessive for maintaining a personal site,

dunno bout frontpage, was reading bout it in netguide, and they reckon its 'for larger sites', but im not too sure...

I would also suggest that - I learn't HTML a couple of years ago and I find that WYSIWYG editors just don't cut if for me now. I always end up modifying the code by hand. Since learning HTML, I have also grapsed XHTML and CSS2 which I now use for all my web pages. Like tommy said, its not very hard to learn but you'll be much happier with the end result.

116660 2003-01-26 07:01:00 You can enrol in the HP learning centre, and get a free HTML course

http://www.hplearningcenter.com/

There is a HTML course starting soon - not sure if its full or not

Would have to agree with other comments posted here - learning HTML is a better bet but if time is of the essence then you can't go too far wrong with Composer which is bundled with Netscape/Mozilla v7.0x/1.2.

I found Composer useful, initially.

Then I followed my nose to lissaexplains (http://www.lissaexplains.com) and away I went, in a manner of speaking.

Also, webmonkey (http://www.webmonkey.com) is a fantastic resource as well.

116662 2003-01-26 07:32:00 thanks all.
Yeah, i was hoping to start creating my site in the next few days - i've already 'brainstomred' it and planned it out, now i just need to create it...
so, i was planning to use a wysiwyg editor.
Where one of you said 'Front page' is for large sites - does tht mean sites with lots of pages.
Also, i've read tht some things aren't supported by FP or vice versa.
anyway, thanks for all help - i'll have a look at some of those progs and mite take up leaning HTML in my free time.
Also, tht HP learning centre - is tht all free?
cheers

FrontPage is optimised for Internet Explorer browsers. Pages viewed in other browsers such as Netscape, Opera, Mozilla may sometimes look different to what was intended and seen using IE.

Yes, the tutorials are free.

116664 2003-01-26 23:27:00 1st page is not getting updated anymore, and their website hasnt changed since 5 September, 2002. And the people seem to have dissapeared. Go th tho forum and read about it.

Instead of 1st Page, try HTML Builder XP

It was made by a company who split, one made 1st Page, and the other did HTML Builder XP.

They update their program regularly, and are still active.

116665 2003-01-26 23:52:00 If you have the time, download a trial version (30 day trial) of Dreamweaver MX. It's a great program (except for the pricetag), but 30 days will be enough for you to have a decent play around with it, and create whatever webpages you want. Of course, if you plan to use it long-term, then pay for it (over $1000).

It is also available on some recent PC World CDs, and Netguide CDs (to save you downloading)
