116412 2003-01-25 02:02:00 Still having a problem trying to get the HP4200 Scanner to work with XPpro.
Have a partition with win98se in the other partition and the scanner works fine there, but the rebooting to do that is a pain.
Contacted HP helpline and one of their suggestions was,"Verify the USB controller is on an IRQ with nothing sharing it except the IRQ holder for PCI Steering".
On looking at the IRQ's in System information, IRQ5 is in twice with this along side each entry, "VIA REV 5 or later USB Universal host controller"
Not knowing what this means could someone help me. Should having two of these be the cause of my problem?, if so how do I delete one.
Have the latest disc and drivers from HP so that is not the problem and the comp has plenty of Ram etc.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated...Regards Ron.

Have you checked the Events log to see whether at boot time under XP Pro there are reported conflicts between the componentry in your computer?

I only ask because it is possible that the IRQ Steering table may have conflicts. Not uncommon - I myself have an illegal write address being detected although I'm not going to do anything about it because my computer works fine nonetheless .

Be that as it may, perhaps - I use the word advisedly - the only way to get the scanner to be recognised by XP Pro is for you to uninstall the drivers for the USB ports.

On rebooting, that act should force XP to reassign an IRQ to these ports, potentially the same IRQ, and initiate plug 'n pray to reinstalling the drivers for them.

On the other hand, if you do this, then this act may have ramifications for the use of the scanner under Windows 98SE which you mention having on another partition of the same hard drive.

Dare I say it, but it might be a case of sucking in a large gulp of fresh air and giving it a whirl.

116414 2003-01-26 07:56:00 Thanks Harry for the reply, could you tell me in detail, how to find the events log?
What is PCI Steering?
Cheers Ron.

You'll find the events log by opening up the Events Manager .

Go to the root drive for XP Pro ( I mention it that way because it could be either the C or D drive depending on which partition you have 98 and XP installed on) .

In the root drive for XP Pro go to the Windows\System32 folder . Trawl down until you find eventvmr . msc . Double click on this file and all of the events logged can be viewed by clicking on each heading in the left frame .

As for PCI steering I'll admit I'm not an expert on the issue, so better to point in you in this direction ( . microsoft . com/default . aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q216573" target="_blank">support . microsoft . com) and here ( . microsoft . com/default . aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q224826" target="_blank">support . microsoft . com) to provide some introduction to the topic . You'll need to go abreast further from these links to better understand it . Since these directions point to Microsoft you couldn't go too far wrong .

Meanwhile, I'd stand by my earlier post - under XP Pro, uninstall the drivers, reboot, reinstall the drivers, then plug your scanner back in .

I found I had similar issues to you installing my sound card, ethernet card and what-have-you under XP Pro .

I would find one or the other cards wouldn't work because of some IRQ conflict .

The resolution, for me, was to rearrange among the PCI slots each card until I found a configuration under which XP Pro happily assigned IRQ slots AND under which each card happily worked .

IRQ slots and a few other things are in part by determined by the BIOS and XP .

(See above - those links confirmed something I intuitively guessed . )

Of course, your issue is you can't get your scanner to work via one of your USB ports but since those same USB ports are assigned IRQ's then one resolution, if maybe your only one, is to uninstall the drivers for them and reboot .

That way you'll force XP Pro to reinstall the drivers and by association force the assignment of another IRQ .

You might also want to consider following my approach, uninstall the drivers for one of your PCI cards, close your computer down, open it up and remove one of your PCI cards, put it another slot, turn your computer back on, plug 'n pray should detect the new arrangement, you should either automatically have drivers reinstalled for your newly arranged card, or you can manually install them, then see what effect this has for the USB ports issue .

116416 2003-01-27 01:57:00 Thanks Harry. Foung the events log OK and there were some errors listed, but really didn't tell me anything.

Now would you please tell me how to uninstall the USB drivers and hopefully it will work on rebooting.

Sorry to be such a pain....Ron..

Before you do any of the following unplug the scanner from your USB port .

Have your copy of XP handy in case, on reboot, you need it . Also, have your HP scanner drivers handy as well .

In XP select the My Computer icon, right mouse click (or left if you have set that way) and choose < Manage > .

The Computer Management module should open .

In the left hand frame choose < Device Manager > .

In the right hand frame find the entry entitled something along the lines of "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" . Expand the folder by clicking on the + symbol .

Right mouse click each entry and choose < Uninstall > . You'll probably get a bevy of warning messages so click okay to each .

Reboot your machine . But do not plug your scanner back into the machine for the time being .

On reboot XP should note that there is a USB controller present but no drivers for it . So, and this is where we'll assume plug 'n pray takes over, XP should install drivers for it .

This driver installation may occur once you see the desktop or before . So be patient .

If XP finds the drivers on your hard drive it will install them for you, if not, you may be prompted to insert your XP disc so that the appropriate drivers can be gleaned from there .

Just a friendly reminder that at this stage your only going to be installing USB drivers, not scanner drivers .

Okay :-)

Next off, before doing anything else, grab your HP manual . Reaffirm each installation instruction HP outlines .

For example, it may be that your required to install the drivers before plugging in the scanner . Although, maybe you don't have to either . Obviously, I'm in the blind here since I don't have a HP scanner!

Nonetheless, if their manual states install scanner drivers, then plug scanner in, then that's the way to go .

I hope after all of this everything works . So post back and let us know how it goes .

Just out of curiosity Ron24, why do you have two OS'es on your PC? Wouldn't things be simpler by having just the one?

Harry

116418 2003-01-28 20:40:00 Hi Harry. Continuing the saga of the scanner.
I followed the instructions and everything went along as you instructed, deleted all the USB drivers, which incidentally meant my mouse wouldn.t work. Which frightened hell out of me until a friend told me to reboot using the windows logo on the keyboard. It then picked up the drivers and the plug and play picked the scanner and said it was OK and ready to use.
The only problem is the BL....... thing still won't work, so Harry thanks for all your help and I give up on it and will use it on 98se.
The reason for win98 on the other partition is just to avoid the problem that we are having now. I had read of the problems of XP picking up existing Printers, scanners etc. and thought it would be an insurance and at least these things could still be used.
Thanks again for your help...Ron.
