116353 2003-01-24 20:32:00 It's always the way, isn't it... the app you don't think you need is the one you want not far down the track.

OK, I have Office 97, which includes Access, for the Win 98 machine. For the Win XP computer I bought Office XP OEM version (not an upgrade) which doesn't include Access. I have a job coming up that probably needs to be done in Access rather than Excel and I don't really want to go on the old PC to use it.

Can I somehow install just Access alongside Office XP? I figure it won't be a good idea to just try and install in the same folder as Office XP but what are the chances of it going somewhere else on its own, maybe on a different partition if necessary?

Anyone have any ideas or tips please?

116354 2003-01-24 21:12:00 Susan, I thought Office97 was not compatible with XP but then computers being what they are, what does not seem to work for some seems to work for someone else .

I would take a punt and try installing just Access and see what it does, it might install somewhere else .

You will either get a error message early on that Access cannot be installed, it will install but fail to run or it will install and run and be happy as .

Nothing to lose and if it does fail you still have the kids computer to do the work off .

116355 2003-01-24 21:36:00 Don't install Access 97 after installing a later version. Conflicts and other problems will arise after common files are overwritten by the earlier version. Merlin (503)
116356 2003-01-24 22:54:00 There is no compatability problem with Office 97 and XP, per se.

Merlin is correct that installing an older app after the newer one is a risky business. You would have a greater degree of success by uninstalling Office XP, installing Access 97, then Office XP.

I have had 2 versions of Office running OK, but only by installing in the right order.

Why will Excel not handle your task, would be my question? Is it more than 65535 lines in length?

116357 2003-01-25 08:19:00 No, I don't think it would be a good idea to just install Access over the top of Office XP for the reasons Merlin and godfather give . What I was wondering is if I could install into a different folder/partition to avoid conflict of files but that might be a bad idea too . Uninstalling Office to install Access first sounds like the most sensible option .

godfather: It is possible that Excel will be sufficient for the job as I probably won't be needing any more than 1,000 rows, but it's the number of columns that I'm concerned about . I will need to record club members' meeting attendances and at a possible two or three meetings per month the columns will soon add up .

116358 2003-01-25 08:29:00 Thats about 7 years to a spreadsheet.

Or you could run a year to a worksheet, just link them for any calculations? A new worksheet every financial year, all in the same workbook?

Installing some older office programs in another directory will not stop critical .dll's from being installed where windows wants them, in all proability.

Remember Access is not very portable between versions, not like excel etc. You could lock yourself into something too old?
