116949 2003-01-28 22:23:00 My computer keeps reseting after 15-30 min of playing graphic intensive programs. It has a new MSI 6380E board and 2000+Xp CPU (2nd one of each). Ive tried 3 grahic cards Radeon 7500, G4 440 and Ti4200. Operating temps using PC Alert (By MSI) normal sytem 30-35 CPU 36-38.When under load System Slightly higher and CPU 38-41. 41 degrees seem to be the temp computer resets as though It reset button has been pushed. It has 120mm input fan in base, 80mm outlet near top , a 400watt power supply with dual fans. A USB Scanner, USB microsoft mouse and USB zip drive.Any ideas as Im running out of them kbappl (2362)

116951 2003-01-29 01:34:00 whoa, temps shouldn't be a problem at all, those are really really good temps for an athlon 2000!!!! too good??? My athlon 2000 is at 56 and i'm just on the net :S getting a volcano 9 next week :D. I don't think the tbred athlon core is out yet for athlon 2000 so i figure those temps are probably wrong. When it restarts quickly boot up into the bios and check the temps in there cos their the most accurate or try motherboard monitor,

p.s. what is your case temp as well, cos i have the same sort of case fan setup, 120mm on front, 2 80mm on back and goddam i have no where near those temps...

116952 2003-01-29 02:00:00 There is a known problem with nVidia gfx cards where the computer resets at random. After the computer has finished restarting does it say "The system has recovered from a serious error"?

If so, have a look on nvidia.com for some WHQL drivers for xp.

116953 2003-01-29 02:32:00 what OS? XP will reset instead of bluescreening . they is a tweak to get around that . have you check the bios for an overtemp shutdown?

mmm . . . . not to sure whats dave is on about with the tbird core tho . . . . .

tbred core is the athlon using .13 micron or somthing and its cooler than the old palamnio core which is .18 micron???? But even then i don't think the tbred core is THAT cool

116955 2003-01-29 04:17:00 dave- other way around. the older cpu, t'bird is upto 1.4 ghz (which are one of the hottest cpu's around) while the XP is uses the Palomino core which runs a lot cooler. however they also have internal diode which reads higher than what the older t'birds external sensor (actually its a mobo sensor) did.

however you can find mobo's that don't report the correct temp anyway. (had one recently that had its case temp 15 degrees out to high).

116956 2003-01-29 06:20:00 As tweak'e said there is a tweak to make windows XP blue screen instead of restarting. So here it is www.xteq.com thats not all its good for so have a bit of a play and see what you come up with.

Another thing you can try is removing everything from your board (sound card etc) and just plug in the video card, CPU, Ram, system speaker power switch and HD. That includes removing all USB connections and everything else you may have. Unplug from the motherboard all the system cables (reset switch etc). Boot the system, see if its stable - if so add one component at a time and test for a reasonable period of time. If you can, try swapping the RAM out.

If still persists - check for a bios update, i have a feeling MSI has a kind of live bios update feature where you simply run the software whille connected to the net and volla! new bios. Also download all the latest Windows Updates and device drivers (video card etc).

Good luck

Heres a time line of amd processors, by tbred i mean thoroughbred
so it went
Athlon XP Palamino Core (.18 micron process)
then to the
Athlon XP Thoroughbred Core (.13 micron process)
Since it was smaller it was cooler so more overclocking :D infact a lot of ppl were able to get their athlon 1800 tbred core to 2ghz :o thats a good overclock for an athlon

Currently the only ones the tbred core is in the high end XP's and low ends, not the 2000 yet i believe...
