116879 2003-01-28 08:33:00 I am wanting to re-install XP Pro. The preoblem is, I dont have a CD.

With my computer came an XP cd, but it says it is for backup and recovery only.

I have a some number for XP as well.

116880 2003-01-28 08:34:00 Why do you need to reinstall XP?

116881 2003-01-28 08:40:00 Not re-install now, same time in the future. I want to make sure I can now, because its better than finding out I cant when its too late. mejobloggs (264)
116882 2003-01-28 08:44:00 How about backing up your data now? Reformatting, partitioning your hard drive and installing XP on one partition, and then copying all your data to the other partition.

116883 2003-01-28 08:49:00 I could be wrong but sounds like the BackUp and Recovery Disk you mention is also your WindowsXP disk in a round about way because it will also include or could include your drivers, some programs etc all on one CD.

Not many stores will include a full CD of the OS now, most are just backup and recovery so when you need to reformat you stick that CD in the tray and it will format and install XP and the various required drivers for your modem, video etc.

I am not certain about recovery disks but I think some anyway will include two options when first started, a complete wipe over and install so you need to make sure you have everything backed up and a reinstall of just windows or something.

116884 2003-01-28 08:55:00 The recovery CD will reinstall a full copy of XP onto your system, just as it left the shop. Usually that means no data will survive, so backing up the data is your only worry.

And reinstalling all the Windows updates etc.

116885 2003-01-28 09:20:00 whew, thanks. Maybe I didnt make it clear, i wanted to know if my cd would install windows, because it said "backup and recovery only"

So now that I know it can, then could you explain backing up to me.

Do I create a system restore point, and put it on a cd, or what?

116886 2003-01-28 09:24:00 oh, and what exactly is partitions? I have heard more negative things about it, saying it is risky and stuff.

Is it like having 2 hard drives on 1? I wouldnt mind Linux, but I would like to have a good computer, and not screw it up.

Buting a new harddrive so i could have 2, is very expensive for me (being 15), but would that be better?

I have 27.5 GB now

116887 2003-01-28 09:26:00 37.5 not 27 mejobloggs (264)
116888 2003-01-28 21:03:00 A partition is where you create several virtual hard drives on the one hard drive disk . Instead of one disk of say 40gb you could have C drive at 10, and for arguement sake another 3 of 10, you would keep C just for programs and operating system, D could be Linux, E might be all your files and data or what ever, F might be music . . . . . as a example .

There are advantages with partitions, quicker defrag and scan of C Drive, if Windows falls over you might be lucky and just need to format C and still retain everything on D+ .

You can create partitions with FDisk when formatting, or you can use a third party program such as Partition Magic which will cost you . I think Billy or someone gave info a while back on a free partition tool as well .

As for backing up . You could get a program such as Ghost and make a image of your hard drive to a CD, thats one way, if you don't have Ghost and don't want to buy it, you can make a backup of your data to CD such as your address book, emails, data, music, files etc, anything you have created and cannot afford to lose in other words .
