116860 2003-01-28 02:19:00 Hi
Just wondering if you solved your modem problem.
I have just struck the same thing, dials up good as gold but as soon as it makes the connection all hell breaks loose & the noise is terrible.
Modem is a Dick Smith Conextant RS56/SP-PCI on Win 98SE
I have the correct drivers installed but still no good.
Just wondering if yours is the same model?
I've installed hundreds of modems & never come across this before which makes me think there is a fault with this particular model.
Thanks

116861 2003-01-28 02:42:00 When you say all hell breaks loose, you mean it has dialed in and connected ok but then it makes a lot of noise or is it making a racket as it goes through the final connection phase.

I had a friend who had this modem model and no trouble connecting but once the connection was made it would make a hell of a racket but did not seem to affect anything he did other than drive him mad.

He found a fix for it but I cannot recall what it was.

If this sounds like the same let me know and I will try and get hold of him and see what the cure was.

116864 2003-01-28 08:04:00 Hi Stumped.

Philip said he does not have that computer anymore but he said he downloaded a file, he cannot recall the one but I sent him a copy of the link that Jim gave you and while he cannot be certain he thinks it was something like this.

Only real difference between his at that time and yours now is that you have 98 and he had ME.

You could try the file that Jim gave you and see if that helps you

116865 2003-01-28 08:26:00 Thanks guys, but I'd already tried that one, I even chucked it into a machine running XP & it didn't work either.
Might take it back to Dickys & get my money back.
Bought it ages though & don't think I can find the receipt.
Thanks anyway.

116866 2003-01-29 06:29:00 Had a friend with a similar problem and he found a really simple and effective solution that I would never have thought of but it only works if you modem has a speaker connection on it. If it does, get yourself a pair of old head phones and cut the jack off it and insert it - bingo, no more sound from your speaker. Failing that get one of those jack converters - about $3 from DSE. demonmors (1299)
